167.0. "Israel's air strike this past weekend" by ZEPPO::MAHLER (Michael) Mon Aug 11 1986 13:24

This past weekend, Israel struck at various presumed bases
near it's border. This was done not as a retaliatory measure
but as a means of 'preventative maintainence'. This has also
happened before when the Iraq reactors were blwon up.

No I don't want to fuel any fires here, but what do you all
think about air strikes for 'preventative' measures ?

Mike, "Preventative Maintenance", as you refer to it is preferable
to retaliation. Why? Because retaliation is obviously in response
to an attack from the enemy, which in their case could imply civilian
casualties. Much better to nip evil in the bud.

Granted. I looked back at .0 and realized that I might
have lent a negative attitude towards the subject, neigh,
I was was just wondering what everyone else thought.

    Mike,

I have always found it difficult to form an opinion on any of Israel's
military actions. It is hard for me to judge right from wrong or
good from bad when my emotions get in the way. My usual response
to something like an air strike or "preventative maintenence" as
you call it, has always been that Israel does what is necessary to
    survive...good or bad.

"A protectionary reaction strike means never having to say
    you're sorry".	-- B.D. in Garry Trudeau's cartoon strip
    			_Doonesbury_, regarding U.S. bombing of
Laos (?) during the Vietnam War.

Israel has more to fear from Lebanon than we had to fear from Laos
    then.
