| Brookline is the in-town center of Jewish life in Boston. The town is
about 3-4 miles South of Cambridge. If you're going by public
transportation, take the subway ("Red line") downtown to Park St., then
walk upstairs and take a Green Line trolley outbound. You want a Beacon
St. (Clevland Circle) trolley. Get off about 1 mile after the trolley goes
above ground, at "Coolidge Corner" -- it's the first large intersection
you get to. This is the intersection of Harvard St. and Beacon St.
There's a large "Bay Banks Norfolk Trust" on the South-East corner. Walk
North along Harvard St. There are several bakeries, butcher shops, and
grocery shops starting 3 or 4 blocks North. You'll pass a large Synagogue,
Kehillath Israel, on your left (384 Harvard St.)
A few blocks further along, you will pass Levine's funeral home on your
left, then a large supermarket (Purity Supreme) on your right. Directly
opposite Purity Supreme is Rubin's Kosher Deli.
If you're driving from Cambridge, get a street map! (Warning, this is
from memory): Go South from Harvard Sq. over the Charles river, past
Harvard Stadium. Continue for most of a mile to Cambridge St. (street
ends). Turn right, proceed for 1/2 mile to the first large intersection.
Turn left. You should now be on "North Harvard St." in Allston. Continue
about 1/2 mile to Comm. Ave. (about 2-3 stop lights). Keep going straight
across this incredible intersection. Rubin's is about 2 blocks further on
on your right. Note how the street changes character when you enter
Brookline.
I can't offer you other suggestions as to other Kosher resturants
or synagogues.
Also, Harvard Hillel -- in Harvard Square -- has an Orthodox Minyan and a
Kosher cafeteria. I'm sure they would welcome out of town visitors.
They're at 74 Mt. Auburn St. The phone is (617) 495-9646. The kitchen
phone is 876-3535.

| Just a minor correction -- when you cross the bridge leaving Harvard
Square (JFKennedy St., "formerly Boylston St."), you're getting
on North Harvard St. (Harvard B-school and stadium are along it.)
It slightly veers left at the first light (at the 7-11) and ends
at Cambridge St. Go right, then left at the first light after the
turnpike bridge, and that's Harvard Ave. in Allston, which becomes
Harvard St. in Brookline.
A few blocks after Reuben's, there's the Cafe Shalom , which is
kosher milchig. That's the heart of the North Brookline shopping
area, which has kosher bakeries and mediocre bagels too. You can
also get sorta-kosher food at Haim's Deli on Beacon St., about half
a mile west of Harvard St., just past Washington St./Square.
You can also leave Cambrdige via the Western Avenue Bridge; when
you pass Libon Volkswagen on your left, you're almost at North Harvard
St., so make a left and proceed as above to Cambridge St. This
might be better when Harvard Sq. is a total mess.

| The last two replies sure sum it up -- head for Brookline!
As you guessed, Worcester and its suburbs are nearly an hour west of
Boston, and not worth the trip if your time is limited.
Hope you have an enjoyable visit.
Joyce
PS Be wary of traffic TO the Cape on Friday afternoons, and FROM the
Cape on Sunday afternoons and early evenings.

with good food and a good hashgocha.
