155.0. "Names with a G" by APPLE::MATUS (Roger Matus) Tue Jul 08 1986 12:28

Would anyone have suggestions for pretty baby girl names which would
    begin with "G"?

My wife and I are expecting a child in early October. While we
have no problems with a name for a boy, the girl's names seem to
be too harsh. We'd really appreciate your help.

Well Roger, there's always the popular(maybe not in this country)name
Gila. I can't think of others right now, but that's a start.

My Hebrew name is "Gevorah", which means "strong" (same as my English
name, Charlotte, means). I'll look up some more tonight, if I get
a chance. Personally, I wouldn't saddle an American child with
an unusual name like Gevorah unless you live in a very religious
community (my sister-in-law named her daughter Rina Batya, but where
she lives that won't be unusual...).

I'm not looking for an overly religious name.

My 5-1/2 year old daughter's English name is Kira (Hebrew is Yakira).
I really believe that it is pretty, easy to spell and actually simple.
My wish is to find something equally as good.

    Thank you.

I've always liked Gabriela. I'm not sure of the implications of
the name, but it sounds nice. I've known a couple Israelis with
this name. The nickname, Gabby, can be a little demeaning though.

    Good luck and congradulations!

    Some more choices:

    Gita (From Yiddish for Good)
    Geulah	(Redemption)
    Gilah	(Happiness)
    Gevira	(Strength)
    Gali	(Ocean Waves)

    Hope these help.

Galya or Galit (wave) is, I think, more dignified than Gali...

Gavriella (Hebrew version of Gabrielle) has more panache...

When she is a teenager you will be saying the following:

God, why don't you clean up your room.

    God, get off the phone.

    God, are you still eating.

    Gila (joy)

How about Giselle or Glenda. I like the sound of Giselle, that's
all. I don't know why I like Glenda.

My grandmothers name before it was changed to Gertrude was Gazella
although it sounds corny to a lot of people, I kind of like it.
Otherwise, my more serious suggestion would be Galina (a Russian
    name).
