154.0. ""What is Judaism" for beginners" by EAGLEA::DANTOWITZ (David .. DTN: 226-6957 -- LTN2-1/H07) Sun Jul 06 1986 21:10

    I am currently trying to find a book to give to a few of my non-Jewish
    friends. This book should be able to answer questions like "Do
    the Jews have a Pope in Israel?" and other "good ones". The people
    I have in mind have grown up with Jews, but never had anyone to
    ask questions of, thus they have some pretty interesting
    misconceptions.

    David,

    	You might want to read through topic 129.*, it was started by
    me, a non-jewish person, who wanted to have all those questions
    and more answered, and several people throughout the topic recommended
    several good books to me... I have not been able to read through
    all of them yet though, so I can't recommend one over the other yet...
    Hope those might help though.

    P.S. The reason for starting that topic is still going very well
    if anyone would like that update 8-)...
154.2a couple of references...HYDRA::FEINBERGDon FeinbergMon Jul 07 1986 11:3116
A couple of good basic books:

	"Nine (or "eight", depending on the edition you find...) Questions
	 People Ask About Judaism". I think Simon and Shuster has picked this
	 one up. Good for stereotype shattering and basic education!

	Rabbi Donin's books are (much more involved but excellent:
	"How To Pray As A Jew", "How To Raise A Jewish Child"; there
	is a third one (the one he wrote first) on being a Jew - the
	exact title escapes me at the minute. If you ask at the Israel
	Bkstore in Brookline, they'll know what you want.
	Or send me mail and I'll get the exact details, as I have
	the book at home.
