89.0. "The Great Matzoh Shortage!" by 11637::GOLD () Tue Mar 25 1986 10:56

    I listened to the Kol Yisrael broadcast last night. Seems like nothing
    is sacred!

    There is going to be a MATZOH shortage this year. Apparently, there
    have been three fires at Matzoh bakeries in the recent past, causing
    what the radio commentator predicted would be a matzoh shortage
    in Israel for this Pesach! Maybe it's a Libyan plot?

    For all you Israeli matzoh freaks, you may have to settle for good(?)
    old "Made In The USA" matzohs this year! Better buy your stocks early!

89.1Serious concern for some YehudimPFLOYD::CHERSONTue Mar 25 1986 16:347
    Have you seen any Israeli matzot in a store? The best as far as
    I'm concerned is Rishon. Before I lived in Israel I used to think
    that Manischewitz was great, now I know better.

    The serious implication is that this would affect the supply of
    matzot to Jews in countries where none are produced, and they rely
    on deliveries from Israel.
89.2Opportunity knocks!11637::GOLDTue Mar 25 1986 17:4613
    I agree with you about Rishon. It is the best. We usually are able
    to get some at Stop and Shop. We'll have to see about this year.

    They did make a point of the issue about sending matzoh to the rest
    of the world in the newscast. You are right, many boxes of matzoh
    are shipped to Jews in other parts of the world each year. Hopefully,
    they will have enough of a supply.

    Maybe this is a good export opportunity for the US, with our trade
    deficit and all. We could replace Israel as the world' largest exporter
    of Matzoh! I wonder if the Japanese would accuse us of dumping! :-)

89.3fresh this year....TAV02::RUVENRuven Caspi ISRAEL Herzelia tel. [972] (52) 548331Wed Mar 26 1986 06:427
    		Hello from sunny Israel.
    Well we try to get sober from "PURIM" and you guys are worried about
    "pesach" . This problem they had with the matzoh is going to garanty
    fresh matzoh this year. I buy them only on the eve of "pesach" to
    get them fresh. this year no problem. All the left over from last
    year is gone.....

89.4some like it well-doneTAV02::GOLDMANThu Mar 27 1986 10:196
    While I didn't pay to close attention to the news - my
    understanding is that all the fires were at the "Aviv
    Matzoh" factories/warehouses and that most of what went
    up in smoke was destined for export.

    No signs of a shortage in the states. We bought our supply of Aviv
    today, 5 lb. for $3.99. Less than we paid last year.

89.6Terrorism at sourcePFLOYD::CHERSONMon Apr 07 1986 11:158
    Following up on this story, according to the Shabbat edition of
    Maariv, the fires that were set at the three Matzoh factories, are
    now suspected of being set by arsonists. That's not all, Palestinian
    terrorists are now suspected of doing the dirty work. Their objective
    may have been to force Israelis and other Jews to eat chomatz during
    Pesach, kind of frightening, eh?
