Yes, I did catch the film about Jerusalem, I thought
it was extremely open minded and not biased towards
any ONE particular ethnic group and I was pleased and
informed after watching it. Fascinating.
The wedding scene WAS very interesting and I am glad
I am not the only one who found it to be so different
(Save the Hebrew blessings). Did you check out that
outfit the bride was wearing and how they smeared the
Henna into the hands of the bride and groom ? (If
it was still there in the morning, the marriage would last.).
I would love to learn Much more about these rituals.

As for the prtrayal of jews in the media, here in N.Y. the major
publication with a standing is the N.Y. Times. As far as I am
concerned the Times has a very prominent anti-jewish attitude.
In High School (yeshiva of flatbush) one of my Rabbi's would go
over the times in the morning with us and point out a general flavor
the paper had in it's stance. In the editorials William Safire
was the only Pro-Israel/Jewish writer. Among the most anti were
Flora & Anthony Lewis. Also a few weeks ago the times printed two
articles, one front page Sec. A, the other page 1 Sec. B. One had
to do with a scandal recently announced of money laundering at a
yeshiva and the other which was not a timely piece nor needed to
be on page 1. was entitled 'Who is a Jew?' and outlined the schisms
developing more prominently as of late in the American Jewish
community. I'm trying not to sound too paranoid, this is just an
example of instances that have accumulated over years of reading
that paper.

Re .1 - I know a few Yemenites here in Brooklyn,
we used to pray in their shul. I could try to find out some of their
minhagim for you.

| A short item on the "Happenings" page of the Assabet Valley Beacon
and associated local newspapers (April 24) carried the following
opening sentence:
"The American Jewish Historical Society is seeking brief reminiscences
from Jewish individuals who passed the Statue of Liberty when arriving
in the United States for the first time."
"Jewish individuals"?
Would those of other religions have been referred to as "Moslem
individuals", "Catholic individuals", "Hindu individuals", "Protestant
individuals"? Of course not. They would have been properly called
"Moslems", "Catholics" and so on.
Why not then just plain "Jews"?
I'll tell you why. "Jew" and "Jews" are unconsciously regarded
as perjorative terms, to be spat out in derision, not to be used
in polite society or in public discourse by liberal-minded, objective
journalists in this part of the country.
It pains me too much to believe that the item was published as
submitted by the American Jewish Historical Society.
Does anyone out there prefer being referred to as a "Jewish individual"
rather than as a "Jew"?

| "Shoah," the 9 1/2 hour documentary film about the holocaust,
will be shown at Holy Cross College in Worcester between May 4
and May 13.
Call the Jewish Community Center at 756-7109 for information on
show times and tickets. The film will be shown in two parts;
check the schedule for the dates for Parts A and B.
