77.0. "When is a bean not a bean?" by SWATT::POLIKOFF () Mon Mar 10 1986 13:11

    When one speaks of beans one must use the horticultural genera or
    Latin name because some things that people call beans are not beans.
    For instance a guinea pig is not from Guinea and is not a pig.
    ( Poo! Poo! How did a pig get into this kosher file? )

    As for beans there are vanilla, coffee and cocoa beans all of which
    we can eat during Passover. I think that only legumes may not be
    eaten during Passover.

77.1...when it's a human beanWHICH::SCHWARTZSteven H. SchwartzThu Apr 03 1986 22:555
    Sounds about right. "Kitniyot" are the various beans not eaten
    (by Ashkenazim) during Passover. Also avoided are corn, rice and
    (correct me if I'm wrong) peanuts.

    Add string beans to your list.
77.2Peanuts?NANDI::CONNAlex ConnSat Apr 12 1986 17:483
Oh no! It can't be peanuts. Peanut oil is what you're supposed to use
to avoid corn oil, right?

77.3Oil vey iz mirWHAT::SCHWARTZSteven H. SchwartzTue Apr 15 1986 09:367
    There are different customs on peanuts and peanut oil. You should
    follow the custom of your father, or your community.

    Some of the kosher l'pesach margarines use cottonseed oil. Look,
    on toast, you can't tell the difference. I would imagine
    sunflower/safflower oil (supervised for Pesach) would also work.

77.4Ycch - cottonseed oilKATIE::RICHARDSONTue Apr 15 1986 17:348
    Cottonseed oil tastes really lousy, though nothing sticks if you
    fry things in it. I never use it except during Pesach, and then
    only because there doesn't seem to be peanut-oil margarine. Does
    anyone know any brands of sunflower or safflower oil that are OK
    for Pesach? I use those oils all year and they taste fine.

    By the way, I have bought Pesachdic olive oil (at least, I found
    some last year; ask me next week if I find it this year).
77.5Oil, Oil, who's Got Some Oil?CURIE::GOLDTue Apr 15 1986 17:596
    Hollywood oil, which I believe is safflower oil, is Pesadich. We
    have found it labeled as such in previous years. Also, Planters
    Peanut oil is Pesadich. Interesting, since there is so much discussion
    about peanuts being kosher for Pesach.

77.6Problems with Planters productsWHAT::SCHWARTZSteven H. SchwartzWed Apr 16 1986 10:105
    Beware of Planters!! They used to have a "K" which represented
    O.K. laboratories supervision. Recently, they started using -gelatin-
    (!) in processing their nuts. O.K. withdrew their supervision.
    As far as I know, the "K" currently on Planters products is
    meaningless.  [Sigh]
77.7Thanks!KATIE::RICHARDSONWed Apr 16 1986 12:485
    Thanks - I will look for the Pesachdic mark on Hollywood oil, which
    is what I normally use anyhow. I often use peanut oil, too, but
    I really shouldn't since I am allergic to peanuts (makes Passover
    hard, as I am also allergic to potatoes). I haven't seen any Planters
    Peanut Oil marked Pesachdic this year, so I guess you are right.
