| I've never seen a Jewish wedding where you'd need more than
a coat and tie. You certainly don't need to shave. (Harrumph!)
If it's a wedding where the men are expected to wear a yarmulka,
then there will be some available at the door.

| I suspect that "Please dress according to Jewish tradition" is a request
for women guests to dress modestly, i.e. no sleeveless dresses or plunging
necklines or the like.

| Roj, I have no idea what that means. TO be safe, just dress
conservatively, and do not be afraid to call the groom and ask
what they mean by it. I am sure they do not mean you should
dress as a Chasid.

Your suspicions are exactly on the mark. This will probably be a wedding
where the bulk of the guests will be Orthodox Jews wearing yarmulkas and
where the ladies will be dressed quite modestly.

| I have recently seen one of those 'proper manners' segments on some TV show.
It didn't have anything to do with a Jewish wedding but the same sort of
cryptic note on an invitation. The answer that was given was to call the
people who sent out the invitation and ask what is meant by 'proper Jewish
dress' the old saying 'better safe than sorry' will help make the embaressment
of calling less then the embaressment of showing up dressed wrong. Besides
if you don't know what it means then probably noone else does either.
