31.0. "Largest Concentrations of Jews?" by BENSON::MAHLER () Mon Oct 28 1985 09:19

For my, and others, information, what are the 3 largest population
centers (regarding Jews) in Massachusetts and the US ?

Is it :
		Boston
Worcester (Does Worcester have more Chasidic than Boston?)
		Framingham

And the US:
		New York
		Boston
		Rhode Island

WHen I mean largest, I mean per capita, not total sum vs. total sum.

METRO NY HAS THE LARGEST CONCENTRATION OF JEWS

MORE THAN ISRAEL

THE AREA WITH THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF JEWS IS MIAMI

Brookline and Newton probably have the highest concentrations of
Jews in Mass, I never thought of Boston proper as having alot of
Jews, but I could be wrong...just a gut feeling.

A friend of mine has just finished writing a "Guide to Jewish Boston"
which includes information on Jewish communities/affairs in Eastern Mass
(including Worcester, Lowell, and even some info on places as far afield
as Nashua). Soon to be at a bookstore near you.

The Jewish populations of LA and Chicago are FAR larger than
Rhode Island or Boston, altho I have no idea how the per capita
numbers come out.

There were many more Jews living the City of Boston from the
1920's thorugh the 1940's and 1950's than there are today (B.U.
students notwithstanding). The largest Boston Jewish community
was in the Mattapan-Dorchester (Franklin Field) area, and there
were also many Jews living in Brighton. In the suburbs during
those years, Jewish communities could be found in Revere,
       Winthrop, and Hull.

In the 40's and 50's, most of the Mattapan/Dorchester Jewish
community moved out to the suburbs (especially Newton, Brookline,
and Randolph); some of the Revere/Winthrop community also moved
further from downtown, many of them relocating to the Swampscott/
       Marblehead area.

Ten years ago, I'm certain that Brookline would have had the
highest percentage of Jews of any city or town in Mass.; today,
I wouldn't be nearly so sure.

West Bloomfield Michigan has the largest Jewish Community Center building
in the United States, with two swimming pools, tennis courts, mini lake,
etc. I have been told it contains the largest group of wealthy jews
in the United States as well.

Michigan.....? You'll have to convince me of that !!!

I find it difficult to believe that WB Michigan has more wealthy Jews
than, say, Lawn Guy Land.

Wealthy Jews? Another myth! Any wealthy Jews out there raise your
hands.

The next thing they will be saying is that Jews have big noses. ;-)

Within the City of Boston, there is still a large Jewish community
in Brighton. My precinct is estimated as over 90% Jewish, at least
among voters. Also a half-dozen or so shuls within easy walking
distance. Some of the neighborhood has a Brookline mailing address
but is in Brighton.

Defining population density is tricky, since you have to define the
study area in question. The highest percentage in the country is
no doubt New Square, NY, which is roughly 100% Jewish. It's also the
_poorest_ village, in recorded per capita income, in NY State.

31.10JEWS IN WEST VIRGINIA??EDUHCI::KANNThu Sep 15 1988 14:1415
JEWS IN WEST VIRGINIA?? SOUTH OF PITTSBURG??

Anyone know if there is any haven for Jewish folks in the Morgantown,
WV area? Or south of Pittsburg?

    Please advise.

By the way, I lived near New Square NY for 8 years. If you're not
Hassidic, they throw rocks at your car. It also must have the
greatest density of shuls in the world, since everyone has a
shul in their basement (explains the lowest per capita income,
    huh??)

According to a Jewish directory I have, Charlestown, WV had 1105
Jews (circa 1980). Beckley, Bluefield, Clarksburg, Fairmont,
Huntington (3), Logan, Martinsburg, MORGANTOWN, Parkersburg, Weirton,
Welch, Wheeling (2), and Williamson are all listed as having
synagogues. Since I don't have a map of WV handy, I have no idea
    where all those towns are.

Huh? I've heard of Charedim throwing stones at cars in Mea Shearim
on Shabbat, but not this! I thought the one access road to New Square
was barricaded on Shabbat. What's the evidence for your claim?
