| Is the population of the USSR increasing or decreasing?
What is the real population of Moscow?
I believe that the real answers to these questions are quite
different from the official Pravda/USSR govt. figures, and
would like to know from someone who has been in a better position
than I to find out.
Thanks much,
Roy

| I also grew up in the USSR and came to the US four years ago. But I do have
time to answer your questions -- fooling around with the terminal late at
night.

| I want you to caution about asking questions containing statistics. The thing
is that I, like you, cannot count Moscow's population and have to rely on
the same sources that you do. You will definetely get from me the answers
that differ from those of Pravda about life in Moscow, Jews, entertaining,
stores, culture, drunks on the streets, office environment, telephone, etc.,
etc.
Some of you will find the answers that they do not like, because I am a very
strong anti-communist and even more so anti-Soviet. But this is because I
lived in the USSR almost all my life and had a first hand experience. But
there will be no lies or propaganda. Try it!

| This is what I havve heard from "The source":
Population of USSR is increasing but mostly for Asian part of it. They say
that russian population is decreasing - I believe this is true. There are
8+ millions are living in Moscow now and about same number are coming there
every day for work and shopping. Now, and this is just between us, I'm not
a KGB agent neither a govt. insider - so all this numbers are from the papers
and books officially published. I don't see reason to doubt these one...
Correspondingly yours, Michael

| I think the daily number of visitors to Moscow (both for work and
shopping) is estimated at 1M people. This is from their daily
"Pravda", and I tend to believe since I know that Moscow public
transportation system cannot handle more than that. At 7 am subway
trains are filled by people so much that when the doors open, people
literally fall out, and I sometimes was one of them!

| Regarding population figures for Moscow: has anyone read what Bob Heinlein
had to say in EXPANDED UNIVERSE? He and his wife spent some time there (I
don't recall when) and, working substantially different algorithms, concluded
that 750K was a reasonable population. He later talked to some military-type
acquaintance, who had other data, and that man agreed with him. But I don't
know the date on that; I think it was during the Kennedy administration....
Parties interested in the details are welcome to send me mail.

| re .6:
Ha! Someone found my source...
The point being that 750K was MUCH less than any "official"
figures--from either East or West.

My girlfriend [SO? Ugh] is writing a paper about Soviet Jews
in teh united states. Essentially, she wants to center the
paper around ethnicity and religion more than politics.
The following topics will be included and i'd like help
with some 'filler' for the outline. This relates only to
Soviet Jews who have emigrated to the US:
1] Religion
- Ratio of various 'sects' [for want of a better word]
of Judaism WITHIN the Soviet Jewish society in the US,
- Other
2] Foods
- Just a list of various foods specific to Soviet
Jews with perhaps the general Knish variety foods
that everyone eats anyway...8-}
3] Lifestyle
- Clothing, oh, anything really. How does 'it' differ from
American Jewish tradition or American lifestyle in general?
Vague, yes, but any help will be appreciated!
