| I think Jewish singles dances are a great way to meet people. Two years
ago I met a woman at a Jewish singles dance and today she is my wife.
Shalom,

There is a newspaper published in the Boston area called the
Jewish Advocate. This is a weekly publication and is available
on some newstands or by subscription. This paper publishes a
list of the varios local functions with a full column of singles
dances.

| The Jewish Advocate is Boston's main INDEPENDENT Jewish newspaper; it's
available on newsstands all over greater Brighton, what are you guys
doing in ham and cheeseland anyway? :-) (I do know the publisher, so
I know it's not put out by the CJP or anyone like that. It's also
fairly large and comprehensive, not just a little newsletter type
tabloid.)
Other known techniques for meeting single Jews: There's an organization
(not technically "singles", but effectively so) called the Jewish Young
Adult Center, in Brookline (566-5946). I won't editorialize on the
variable quality of the crowd... about 700 members, though, ages
22-35. Bna'i Brith has separate singles groups by age, including a
21-30 group and a 25-40 group. Much more, uh, concerned about singleness
and the desire to change it. There's also a rather entertaining (if you
like to read these things, it ain't the Phoenix!) rag called Jewish
Singles Service, which is all personal ads save a couple of monthly
restaurant reviews by the publisher. It's left all over Boston, or
you can write to JSS at 719 Washington St. S122, Newton MA 02160.
Or you could hang out in Coolidge Corner...

| As a long time veteran of "jewish dances", there is no doubt that it's one
way to meet people ... as long as you're comfortable with the loud music/
disco lights/meat market frame of mind. My only problem was the type of
guy I seemed to attract at those dances ... I've met most of the plumbers
and electricians working in the state of Massachusetts.
Most of the dances are advertised via mail outs, ads in the Jewish
Advocate, and announcements in the "Other" category in the Calender section
of Thursday's Boston Globe. I found it easiest just to spend the $10 and
get a subscription to the Advocate; I don't see many copies out by Marlboro.
The address is in the yellow pages of the Boston Globe.
As I started approaching my late 20's, I started to lose interest in dances
and wanted to get involved in other activities. The Young Adult Center in
Brookline is part of the Jewish Community Center in Newton - membership to
the JCC in Newton runs about $200/per person a year, and entitles you to
all kinds of facilities, classes, and activities. Or you can just call
the Young Adult Center in Brookline and ask them to send you a flyer.
The Advocate also lists a variety of other singles groups, activities, and
even dating services ... though be forewarned that the latter can run into
the hundreds of dollars. Because I enjoy skiing, several winters ago I
created my own "ski group" - I ran 1 trip the winter of '83, and three
trips the winter of '84. It allowed me to create a very relaxed, unpressured
environment, meet other skiiers, and in fact ski for free, in return for all
of the work that I put in to organize it. Thus far, from the trips I have
one couple who is engaged, another couple seriously dating, and have myself
met "the man of my dream". My biggest problem now is that with the ski
season approaching, everyone is calling and asking where we're going skiing
this coming winter! Look for my ads in the Advocate around December/
January. The moral of the story is - if you don't see a group out there
that fits your needs, create one of your own.

| ALL THIS IS FINE IF YOU LIVE IN BOSTON, BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE OF
US THAT LIVE IN NY??? ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR HOW TO MEET A "NICE JEWISH
GUY" IN A CITY THAT HAS MORE JEWS PER SQUARE FOOT THAN ISRAEL??
I HATE THE MEAT MARKETS THAT SOME OF THESE SINGLES ACTIVITIES TURN
OUT TO BE, AND IT'S GETTING HARDER AND HARDER TO MEET NICE FOLKS.
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS???
HOPE THAT YOUR HOLIDAYS ARE GOOD ONES.
REGARDS,
JILL

| I disliked the bar/singles dance routine. In most singles dances
the music (if one may call it that ) was so loud that I was unable
to hear a word.
My father being the standard Jewish father used his perogative of
setting me up on blind dates...these are stories in themselves
A college friend of mine set me up on a blind date with a lady
who was a friendf of his wife's.......
Four years of marriage and one beautiful child later I have happiness..
Moral..... Do you have any friends who have friends.....

| As a matter of fact...
A friend asked us if we knew anyone who wanted to date a friend
of his wife's, a 40ish Jewish lady doctor, who was maid of honor
at his wedding. The lady in question lives somewhere in the vicinity
of Lincoln (where my friend lives). So, what do you say??
