| Humm... This sounds really familiar. I got the same speech from my mother,
but as we all know; when a jewish boy gets married he divorces his mother.
On the other hand, I've also heard you can spend your whole life working
for a million dollars or...marry it in 5 minutes. :-)

| When I was in high school, and my parents commented that it would have been
nice if I was dating Jewish boys, I told them that if we still lived in
Brooklyn I probably would be. There were about 5 Jewish kids in our school
system in New Jersey. They agreed that they might have goofed somewhere in
our upbringing.
On the other hand, they were happy when I married a non-Jewish man, because
I loved him, and he was good to me, and all that. They were also unhappy
when I told them we were getting divorced, even though I was seeing a
Jewish man then. By the way, I should mention that neither myself nor either
of these 2 men are religious in any way.

| Hello from sunny Israel.
I spent one year in SOUTH-AFRICA. I had a jewish friend with 3 girls.
Every night before they went to bed he will take them to their
room and ask
" how can you give father a heart failure???"
and then they will answer:
" marry a gouy......"

Oy voyashtmia.
I have#ralso dated many Gouyim, but think that I would
never marry any. Not that I am predjudice, nay I'm not,
but that a women with the similiar backround we all share
is much nicer. I find it a little uncomfortable when I am
talking to a Schikza and I mention something like " Oh,
I could go for some Derma" and she looks at me like
I am from New Jersey or something..

| So, nu? How come my parents like my goyishe wife better than they
like me?
But, then again, I come from a long line of very Reform Jews on
one side, while the other is right out of hte shtetle (I think Tevye
is related).
For the guttural H - how about 'ch' like in Channukah
Also, when did they put a U in goy??
Back to the topic in hand-
Since this area (NJ) is the land of the J.A.P. (you know who you
are) and since everyone I dated (even seriously) could put down
my family because we are NOT RICH JEWS, what else could a poor boy
do?

| Newark, my dear friend, was until ~1970, a city of very distinct
ethnic neighborhoods. I grew up in the Weequahic (wee-kwake) section
of town which happened to be 99 44/100% Jewish. Within two miles
of my house, synagogues outnumbered churches by about 10 to 1. Even
after the shools instituted open enrollment city-wide, my high school
was virtually deserted on Jewish holidays. For a good, accurate
depiction of what this area USED to be, I refer you to _Good-bye
Columbus_ by Phillip Roth. (I don't know why the movie version took
place in Westchester.) In the early sixties J.A.P.-ness exhibited
itself by the question "Which side of the hill do you live on?"
For some reason, the side facing the suburbs was thought to be much
"classier" than the city-side.
For further proof I could always introduce you to my sister.
Please remember that I did refer to Newark in the past tense. The
Jewish population of that city has experienced a Diaspora of its
own.

Ok, then we'll let my sister and yours fight
it out to the death and then we will REALLY see.
Baldwin, Long Island VS. Weequahic, Joisey
It should be interesting.

| I am the gouy in this case, I am Catholic and my hubby is Jewish.
I get along great with his family, him and his family get along
great with mine. We celebrate all the holidays...we support eachother
at the holiday times. These days there is nothing wrong with
interfaith marrages, as long as you both love and understand each
other :-)

P.S. The author of 4.0 should have spelled it "GOY". Maybe the

4.13 | I married one, now about the kids... | IMLAY::LIBOVE | | Fri Jan 04 1991 19:54 | 25 |
| My wife is Roman Catholic, I'm reform Jewish.
As someone asked on .11, the real question is "what to do about the
kids"... and we aren't entirely sure yet.
My wife, Irene, is very strong in her own faith, but precisely as such:
in _her_ own faith, not in "The Church", and as such was willing to
agree (actually, she suggested it) to raise our children (about 7
years forthcoming at this point) Jewish.
We agreed that we wanted to give our children one religion coherently,
so that they would not be confused by the differences in our religious
styles and by the (mis)information that flows about the world about
all religions. I also said that I was somewhat unwilling to raise a
child Catholic because I disagreed with the political organization that
is the Catholic Church, thus her suggestion that we raise the children
Jewish.
I also am very curious as to what decisions were made by people who
intermarried, regarding the religion of the children.
