| The following is specific to apartment-type condos, that is, condos that
are accessed via common halls. In such a condo, does the unit owner own the
door(s) opening onto the hall, is it part of the common elements, or is owner-
ship divided?
A related question: Have you ever heard of a unit owner, after getting per-
mission from the trustees, replacing a unit door opening onto a hall with a
different type of door? For example, replacing a steel door with a solid wood
one to reduce noise?

| In response to some questions the moderator asked off-line: I have read
the condo regulations, and there is no mention of this. I wouldn't expect there
to be, because probably nobody has ever inquired about installing their own
door(s) before.
I am a renter, so I have not seen the deed. However, I doubt that that would
answer my question either. I know that the standard rule is that the owner
owns his side of the wall and (in this case) the association owns the other
side. However, doors are a special case because they are normally installed
and removed as a unit. Hence my question.
I am also assuming, of course, that any owner-installed door would have the
same appearance (paint color, etc.) on the hall side as the other doors. Also,
there is a slight chance that town regulations might require metal doors for
fire protection.

I hope you are getting the permission of the owner (landlord)
before changing the entry door!

| This is mainly a hypothetical question, in case I become a condo owner in
the future. Most of the apartment-type condos that I have lived in have the
same problem, that is, the door is a good conductor of sound.
