| Rosalind,
Gardniner Street is still pretty rough. The end closed to the Liffey
is being "gentrified" as they say, with new apartments aimed at young
professionals. However, as you go up the hill away from the centre of
town, things haven't changed that much. I would be very careful,
especially when returning late at night or with money, handbags, etc.
Although, having said that, you could get mugged staying in Blackrock,
Dun Laoghaire or one of the other more fashionable Southside areas.
As you know, Dublin is a big city with big city problems and tourists
are always vulnerable.
When one of the lads in the Dublin office returns from the May Day
celebrations over the Bank Holiday, they may be able to give your more
advice.

..I think Ken has painted a very accurate picture. Upper end is close to
Dorset street if I am not mistaken. I would indeed be very careful
walking around that area and would not "advertise" that you are a
tourist....in any way.
If you don't mind me asking...Did a tourist board or an agency book
this for you???.

Mick,
Just because the last time you were in that area Tipp were after being
beaten in an All-Ireland semi doesnt mean that the place is that
dangerous. Or were you chasing nurses in Barry's Hotel?
Either of those tasks invites trouble

Ye Kilkenny guys wouldn't know....Its well know that even the locals
run for the hills when they hear that the Kilkenny shower are
around..Not as bad as when the wexford savages come up with the muck
spreaders and mules..
Know nothing about "Barrys hotel" only to steer well clear...

| Thanks for your replies. I booked this through the guide sent by the
Irish Hotels Federation. We've previously stayed in a hotel just off
the Red Light district in Amsterdam, and we had no problems, so we
hoping the same about Gardiner Street. Not that I want to go there, but
is there a Red Light District in Dublin?

| A mate told me (honestly) that there are one or two shops dedicated to
the fetishist on Capel Street (World of Leather or something like
that)....If you need a nice relaxing massage just ask the first priest
that you meet and he can point the way....
