1604.0. "fishing trip." by WOTVAX::NEARYM (wigan_lad) Tue Aug 27 1996 10:26

    Hi There,
    I'm thinking of coming over to Ireland fishing next year as I hear
    its second to none, I've never been to Ireland before but my brother
    goes every year, he says that its the best fishing and the prettiest
    Country he has ever been to (paradise) was the word he used.

    I'm in need of information about bed and breakfast places near locks,
    how to get bait, is it better fishing north or south, would it be
    better to hire a car over there or take my own, or anything I've missed
    I'm in the planning stage and there could be plenty of stuff I've
    missed, ( hey I'm only a guy ).

    Thanks in advance for any information given.

    Mike.

One suggestion, go to Foxford in county Mayo. There are several pubs that
line the river that passes through town. You simply put your Guinness
down (possibly the hardest part of the task), walk out the back door and
drop your line in the water for some of the best salmon fishing in the
world.

1604.2It all depends!CHEFS::MCGETTRICKSWed Aug 28 1996 12:3110
    What are you trying to catch? Salmon / trout / coarse?

    What bait do you prefer? Fly, spinning / worm etc.

    What time of year?

    I refer you to Holohan for advise on fish north and south!!!

    Oh yeah, the Shannon should cover most of what you're looking for, and
    the Irish Tourist Board produces brochures on a theme for many
    activities, one of which is fishing. Give them a bell and they'll send
    it to you. The fishing in Ireland is bloody marvellous.

    Cheers, Laurie.
1604.6What exactly do you want - its probably availableSIOG::BRENNAN_MDrink Canada dry-when do we startThu Aug 29 1996 07:0713

    Coarse fishing - The place is full of it. The midland lakes specoalise
    in it. Base yourself around Mullingar. Cavan etc right up into
    Monaghan. Lots of lakes. Bait is regularily available.

    Alternatively pick up a canal boat just outside Dublin and travel the Grand
    Canal. Lots of coarse fishing in the Grand Canal outside Dublin. It is
    probably best to head towards Athy/ Barrow where the canal and river
    join up regularily. Very good coarse fishing - Pike Perch etc. You
    could also take this route down towards the Shannon. Thus you can
    combine a boating and fishing holiday.
