1581.0. "Finding places in Ireland" by CHEFS::HARWOODJ (A sunken souffl is a risen omelette) Tue Jun 11 1996 10:44

Can anyone help me identify whether the 'Dwelling Place'
refered to on a relatives birth certificate is a
    farm/village or ?

As the relative lives in South Africa, I've been given the task
of trying to help him establish his roots.

    The details are :-

Coolastigue is given as the Dwelling place of father.
Registered in the district of Bridgetown in the Superintendent
Registrars District of Limerick Co. Clare.

The place of birth is described as Coolastigue Donass.

I haven't been able to locate the place on my maps, and wondered if
anyone out there has any suggestions as to the best way of identifying
    this place.

    Regards

Coolastigue is a townland in the parish of Clonlaara (sp ?) near
O'Briens Bridge County Clare. Nowadays you have
counties divided into parishes, which in turn are divided into
townlands. I suppose parish boundaries changed sometimes, so maybe it
used to be in Bridgetown, which is nearby. There used to be Baronies
too so that may be the Doonass bit, but I dunno. I got this info from Alta
vista and O'Briens Bridge post office. I have an OS map of the area,
and it is not all that far from where I live at the mo so I might check
it out a bit more if you like.

The bottom line is, his grandpa was a bannerman who couldn't face
another plate of them auld white spuds.

    Kevin,

That is good news - thank you. Any and all information will
be of great help and interest.

I'm visiting Southern Ireland in September with a group of friends.
So between acting as chauffeur whilst they go walking, it looks as if
I'll should be close enough to visit the general area for him and
    take some 'photos.

The two family names on the certificate are Knox and Warren -
I guess a visit to a few churches would reveal whether these were
    local names or not.

    Many thanks for the help.

    Regards
