1560.0. "Live from Dublin - DNTO" by POLAR::RUSHTON (տ) Fri Mar 08 1996 12:11

For most of you who haven't a clue what DNTO (Definitely Not The Opera)
is all about, it is a Canadian radio program on the CBC (Canadian
Broadcorping Castration) that runs from 1PM to 5PM every Saturday on
    the FM band, nation-wide.

Some border States may be able to pick it up.

I'll be taping it in case there might be a few misguided individuals
    who wish to hear it.

Subj:	March 9 on DNTO from Dublin

dnto for March 9, 1996

Hi, there, it's Nora. Greetings from Dublin! We love the town; it's very cool,
although we're working very hard, and are still a bit jet-lagged. It's Wednesday
night, and things may well change from this point, as we meet more people, but
here are the basics of what you'll hear...

1-2 pm

*We'll talk to Michael D. Higgins, Ireland's Minister of Culture, the Arts, and
the Gaeltacht. No mere cabinet minister, he's also a charming, articulate guy,
and, demonstrating the respect Irish society accords the arts, he's also a poet.
He'll set the stage for our tour of Dublin. It seems Ireland finds itself at a
crossroads: on one hand, Irish culture is still very strong; on the other,
American and pan-European influences are changing the shape of Irish society.
There's much debate about where Ireland is going, and you can see it very
clearly in Dublin, where international influences are most keenly seen.
*Commentator and professor John Boland--the Rex Murphy of Ireland--talks about
the bourgeoning "cafe society" scene in Dublin. Is it a new and valuable
cultural trend, or is it putting the boots to Irish pub life?
*Pub Master Colm McQuiggan and friends walk give me some tips on Irish pub life.
Share a few laughs, and find out some terrific pub stories about some of your
favourite Dublin authors, past and present, from a band of lively actors.
*Speaking of pubs, we visit The Oliver St. John Gogarty historic pub in the very
cool Temple Bar district. We'll do an unplugged session with some wonderful
traditional musicians we met there.
*Fresh Dublin music recorded by Ireland's version of MuchMusic: the HMV music
store on elegant Grafton Street. These are the bands YOU'll be listening to
soon on the other side of the Pond.

2-3 pm

*Laurie Brown balances things out, music-wise, with some new Canadian music from
Meagan Metcalfe. She's got a hot major label deal, but is the album worth the
hype? As well, I know she's been to Dublin, so I think I'll also ask her for
some tips on where to hang out on Saturday night.
*We'll hear from you on the soapbox.
*The HotPress Music Awards are this week. Hot Press is Ireland's Billboard, and
the awards are very well respected and attended. U2's The Edge was there, and
we also talked to the band that BEAT U2 for the best band award (I know,
shameless teasing, but there you go!)
*The guest of honour at the Dublin International Film Festival is Terry Gilliam,
director of "12 Monkeys," "Brazil," "Time Bandits," and a former Monty Python's
Flying Circus member. I'll talk to him about his unusual creative vision, and
why he needs to do things "his way." He's a remarkably frank and charismatic
guy who's gone head-to-head with the Hollywood studios. When Universal refused
to release "Brazil" unless he gave it a "happier" ending, he refused. They were
at a standstill until he took out a full page ad in VARIETY blaring: "WHEN ARE
YOU GOING TO RELEASE MY FILM?"

3-4 pm

*More of my conversation with screenwriter, animator, actor, and director, Terry
Gilliam.
*Ross Porter has a special Canadian retrofile, just in case you thought we'd
abandoned Canada. Dominic Troiano has had a rich career, as guitarist with the
Guess Who, the James Gang, and Mandala. He's being inducted into the Canadian
Music Hall of Fame on Saturday night.
*Ron Robinson offers up some bite-size readings with "UNCLE JOHN'S BATHROOM
READER"
*Cathi Bond wanted to come to Ireland, but her video card wouldn't work, so she
stayed back in Canada for "Virtual Ireland", watching videos about the Emerald
Isle.
*We'll offer up the behind-the-scenes stories on our trip to Dublin. (Ask us
about "The Master Thespian, Drunk Boy")

4-5 pm

*Dave Fanning. Never heard of him? Well his name appears alongside Sinead
O'Connor, Bob Geldof, and U2 in Dublin's Rock and Roll Tour. He is the hottest
and most influential dj in Ireland. He was the first to break U2, Sinead, and
many of today's top Irish bands. Dave and I spend an hour hanging out in the
pub, talking about, and playing some of the best bands in the city. We'll hear
their stories, and we'll get to the heart of what makes Dublin such a unique
site for pop culture.

So that's it! Laptop computer technology is serving us well; it's amazing what
a phone line, a backpack, and the helpful folks at the CBC's opposite number,
RTE can do for you. We're still nailing down some Dublin surprises for you. We
think it's going to be a lot of fun. I hope you can join us...

Nora.
