| Up the Dubs!!!!
When we beat Meath to get out of Leinster AGAIN this year ye may as
well just give the Sam to us and not bother with the semis' and final.
The Jacks' are back....
Ray....(played at Croke Park 4 times for my school and scored 2 goals
against St.Annes of Bray in the Millar Shield final and still lost....)

There was a fella called Keyes playing for Limerick, who scored a point
for them, otherwise it would have been worse.....

| Taken from a recent Electronic Irish Times:
++
Hackett's bookmakers are quoting Dublin, Cork and Meath as
joint-favourites, at 11 to 2, to win the All-Ireland senior football
championship, with Kerry and Derry at 7 to 1. The odds on Clare
retaining their hurling title are 7 to 1.
++
I don't think any of us need worry about the odds of either Limerick
*or* Offaly for the football, whatever about the Hurling ;-).

| Re .1
Your fine talk about winning the Sam typifies the Jacks,
Ray: plenty of hype, but nothing to back it up with.
What sort of girly Englishmen are the Dubs that they
can't beat Meath (pop. 37)? Meath fielded a team of
crocks, including three one-horned cattle, two nanny-goats
and Oisn after he met St. Patrick, but it was apparently
better than any field the Jackeens could muster out of
their population of 20 million young Fianna warriors.
What happened?

| Its a Meath and Mayo Football final...
Meath demolished Tyrone (in more ways than one) yesterday in Croke
park...Tyrone were firm favourites. Meath didn't win many friends
yesterday...Its not in the nature of GAA players to complain about
a physical game but walking on guys heads.. and elbows in the face
seem to be Meaths foundation to winning this game...

| Violence on the pitch has been a growing problem for a number of
years. It has brought the game and its referees into disrepute.
Is there any move afoot to clamp down on this kind of outrage?
Here in England, there have been several successful criminal prosecutions
for violence, assault and grevious bodily harm brought through the
courts. While I'd hate to see this as the norm, it is at least some
kind of sanction against the offenders.
Anybody care to venture an opinion on this?

Were you at the game Mick? I watched it on TV but it didn't seem that
bad. Meath were away the better team, but I, ignorant as I am about GAA,
predicted this Meath victory, which was well deserved in my book. They
were all over Tyrone in the 2nd half. Roll on the Wexford Meath Double
at 36/1.

Having once tried to fight a parking ticket in Limerick Magistrates
Court and suffering permanent psychlogical damage as a result, I don't
see much room for hope in the legal system in these parts. Ever heard
of the Beef Tribunal ? If we let the lawyers on the pitch we might as
well just hand in our wallets and credit cards to the nearest
solicitors.

| Hmm.. I see what you mean. A real bunch of professional crooks as
opposed to the GAA amateur variety?
It is a great pity to see this kind of thing tolerated with no more than
a casual remark from the commentator (a bit of hargee-bargee) and a
wilful blind eye from the referee.
BTW, We get the Gaelic Games here on C4, so I can usually stay informed.
Thanks,
John

1555.11 | it gets tense at times | ESSC::KMANNERINGS | | Mon Aug 19 1996 15:46 | 6 |
| well I suppose it is a physical game and a certain amount of tension
creeps in, but I didn't see any real thuggery and there were some
bookings. Keyes is an exaggerator in my book. Mixing it up with
croquet in Cloughjordan or something. He should take up cricket...

I shouldn't be surprised I suppose..its typical of Offaly folk..I suppose
when your own team have half breeds like Troy,Regan and co. then ye would
feel akin to yer Meath mates.... Staging posts like Tullamore, Clara
,Birr were never places to look for civilisation...maybe study past
ones..They would ate ye! Roll up your windows passing though it..
John...I agree about the 'blind eye" attitude of the referee....and
the comentators also...Though Pat Spillane did point out that a couple
of players were close to getting the line.. O'Rourke hadn't
much to say (though I suppose he couldn't ..been from Meath which is
near Offaly so he is a savage and wouldn't know better.) .

Mick,
Ah now be fair!!. Just because your Mother-in-law is from Meath is no
reason to run down the whole county.
Anyway they were no that bad - by Meath standards. You are old enough
to remember Pat Reynolds, Bertie Cunningham and the RED Collier. Now
there was a bunch of real savages -)

1555.14 | Prediction? | XSTACY::JLUNDON | http://xagony.ilo.dec.com/~jlundon :-) | Fri Sep 13 1996 13:11 | 8 |
| Meath 3-15 Mayo 0-10.
I can't see Mayo winning Sam under any conditions. I would,
of course, love to see them do it, but I think too much of
the football (and other things, some not too savoury) is in
the Meath side.
James.

Its pretty bizare ok..Sherlock claims that some Dublin county offical
made some racist remarks to him..Also allegations of a spitting
incident.
The county mgt committee recommended that the dublin offical be
suspended for a couple of months..but this was voted down by members at
that meeting.
Football is a thugs game.
