1540.0. "Freddie White; one of the best !" by STOWOA::COADY () Thu Jan 11 1996 16:06

Freddie White has setup base in the Boston area and for the last 6 months
or so he has been playing venues in the greater Boston area; Irish Embassy,
Kendall Cafe (Cambridge) and Johnny D's in Sommerville.

However at the last 2 venues there was no more than 15-20 people there, which
is amazing, because 10 years ago he could pull crowds of 200+ at any venue.

In my opinion he is one of the best Blusey-Folk singers and guitar players
around and he has a great new CD out (Straight Up).

Anyway,I was wondering how come a guy with so much talent is not packing the
places out ?, is it because he is unknown ?, he is not a "typical" Irish
Country and Western or Traditional type ???.

He will be playing in Cambridge within the next few weeks; I really hope he
gets a huge crowd, because I think from once people hear him, they will
come back for more.

Just wondering what fellow Celts think and indeed had his popularity died down
in Ireland when he left (and why ?).

1540.2In the US a few years/ Boston since Summer '95STOWOA::COADYFri Jan 12 1996 06:457

    I think he was on the West Coast San Fran (or mayeb Chicago) for a few
    years and came to Boston last summer.

    He plays and sings as good, if not better than ever, but its amazing
    and disappointing to see him play in small pubs to 15-20 people, when
    is talent deserves much greater following.

Bad management? Personal problems? Corkman ;-)?

Any one of those could be enough to finish him off!
1540.4the best little country....ESSB::BREEMon Jan 15 1996 05:3013
    Freddie White deserved more recognition and reward while he was in
    Ireland. I've been to see him a couple of times live over the years and
    always enjoyed his range of songs (from "Down to Zero" back to the "The
    Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"). The Ireland of the late 80s and early 90s
    seems to like
    its artists better packaged and predictable. It's probably a sign of
    our success as a country that we can win 3 (or was it 4?) Eurovisions
    in that period and at the same time help make millions for the likes of
    Daniel O'Donnell and Boyzone.

    Anyway here's wishing Freddie a good run in Boston.

    Freddie plays at Club Passim in Cambridge, on 1/Feb - starting at
    08:30, should be a great nite. I would highly recommend to fellow
    noters that are free that evening to give him a listen ... if you like
    blusey-folk, you won't be disapppointed.

    He is also on America Online; not sure his e-mail address.
