1536.0. "60 Minute special on Ireland!" by XSTACY::JLUNDON (http://xagony.ilo.dec.com/~jlundon :-)) Thu Dec 21 1995 12:38
I understand that 60 Minutes (a popular TV program in the US) is about
to do an edition on crime in, of all places, Dublin. The problem with
drugs and serious crime is very serious in the capital and most people
who will see the program (outside Ireland) will probably be very
surprised that things are so bad in the Land of Saints and Scholars.
The locals will not be surprised, however.
There has been a series of murders, mostly on people involved in the
drugs trade over the past few months, in a sort of turf battle in
Dublin. In a recent episode of _Primetime_ - the main current affairs
program on RTE - they interviewed a local newspaper editor who himself
interviewed a Dublin contact killer.
This contract killer character - for want of a better word - claims to
have been involved in five murders: two as the main man and three as
the backup man. It's all getting very ugly and it seems that some
parts of Dublin's inner city have extremely bad heroin problems. Why
should Dublin be unlike any other western world capital city I suppose?
Just last evening the drugs squad intercepted a man stepping off a
plane from Amsterdam in Dublin Airport. They searched him and found
what they claim to be 3 MILLION in Heroin and 100K in Exstacy ;-).
Just think of all the stuff that gets in undetected, if people are
willing to try to smuggle the stuff in through our main national
airport (Shannon excepted of course)!
Where will it all end :-(?
James.
