1492.0. "1995 Concerts" by RANGER::HORGAN (Craicailte indiadh damhsa) Fri Aug 04 1995 13:30

Shane MacGowan and the Popes are at Avalon in Boston next Wednesday 8/9.

Has anybody listened to their new album, The Snake?

-Julia

This is a review by Kevin Convey in the Herald.

From out of the puddles of Guinness, piles of broken glass and tales of
alcoholism and exhaustion that attended his departure from the Pogues in
1990, Shane MacGowan rises - alive and well enough to make a top-shelf
punk-Celt solo album.

Better by far than the album th Pogues made without him, The Snake finds
the dentally challenged MacGowan in fine, woozy form, spitting out tales
of drink, debauchery and death in a broken voice that makes Dylan sound
like Pavarotti.

The Popes lean harder toward rock than the Pogues did and what they can't
match in musicianship they make up for in enthusiasm. If MacGowan's songs
aren't up to his best work with the Pogues, The Snake is still a comeback
that verges on the miraculous.
