1475.1 | Use the train too | SIOG::FITZPATRICK | | Thu May 25 1995 10:16 | 15 |
| Well, if I were her, I'd take a week to cycle around the Dingle
Peninsula, Ring of Kerry, maybe West Cork.
I'd then go up through Clare (Doolin etc) to Galway and out to
Connemara (another week).
I'd then get a train to Dublin, as there are not too many spots
worth seeing on either the road from Galway or Limerick, to Dublin.
It just would not be worth the bother cycling, in my opinion.
I'll try to check out a hostel for Limerick/Shannon for her first
night.
Cheers,
Michael.

| I kind of second that. I would hate to cut short time spent in Kerry to bike
to Dublin. I have a friend who has biked all over Ireland every summer for the
last 5 years. She knows the hostels well. I'll ask her for some recommondations.

1475.3 | Skip Dublin this time | XSTACY::BDALTON | | Mon May 29 1995 11:51 | 3 |
| Definitely worth spending all your daughter's time in West Cork/Kerry.
Dublin will still be there the next time she visits.

By implication you are saying Cork and Keery won't be. What do you think will
happen to them then ;-)?

They'll all be speaking German there soon. ;v)
I "third" the bike trip to Galway/Clare/Kerry/Cork. I would even
suggest East Cork and Waterford for a pleasant bike trek. See the
breadbasket of Ireland - beautiful farms.

p.s. Just got back from Moscow and am happy to report I went to
the "Irish Bar" at the Moscow Airport. :v)

Isn't there at least two other Irish pubs in Moscow, at least
that was the case two years ago? One of them is within a puck
of a sliothar from the Kremlin (I suppose it would be a long
puck :).

1475.8 | Dublin - damned with faint praise | XSTACY::BDALTON | | Thu Jun 01 1995 06:35 | 4 |
| Coo! There are rock and blues festivals in Dublin are there?
What a great reason to cross the Atlantic - I expect Americans
rarely get to hear much authentic rock and blues in America.

Everybody is different...I know a number of people who come to Dublin
for the Music scene (they appreciate that Music is generally different
everywhere...)

1475.10 | On Her Way | MK1BT1::MORGAN | | Mon Jun 05 1995 13:58 | 14 |
| My daughter leaves tomorrow at 6PM US east coast time and arrives Shannon
about about 10:00 am on the 7th (flies to London, then to Shannon). The
notes and mail messages have been helpful. She has made some adjustments
to her itinerary based on the comments. The most helpful information has
been the suggestions to combine modes of transportation e.g. bike plus
train. This gives her more options than she originally thought she had.
So she is going to remain flexible and just go where she feels like
going. keeping 3-5 days for Dublin.
She is going to start with the Dingle pennisula, and on to the Ring of
Kerry, and then make some decisions.
If you see a woman with red hair, tallish, with a great smile - that's
Denise; stop and say hello.

1475.11 | Can a cyclist stay dry? | ESBTST::GREENAWAY | | Fri Jun 09 1995 18:49 | 19 |
| I remember a around 9 years ago when my future wife and I went on a
camping trip to dingle. We arrived at the camp site unpacked the tent and
started to unfold it. Then I said to her, "where are the poles". OOPs.
I looked around for some small trees to hack down and there they were,
gone. So we quickly folded up our tent and slid back into the car.
We initiated plan B and booked into a B&B.
The second vivid memory that comes to mind of Dingle was driving around
the hilly roads in my Kadett in constant drizzle. We passed several
cyclist tredging along soaked to the skin. I kept thinking "Oh the
poor souls".
I hope your daughter stays dry and doesn't mind the hills.
PS. Dingle has some great pubs and restaurants.
Cheers,
Paul

1475.12 | she's back | MK1BT1::MORGAN | | Wed Jun 28 1995 12:51 | 36 |
| Well, she's back! Everyone was so helpful I thought I would give a
short
update.
She had an OUTSTANDING experience; the scenery was beautiful; the people
were wonderful, she had great discussions (is 'crack' the correct word?)
with many people; one proprietress (sp?) of a hostel sat with her for a
couple of hours and the two of them talked about current issue's facing
women in Ireland today. Divorce is illegal in Ireland, but will change
soon?
She biked from Shannon (her bike was delivered to Dirty Nellies - this
ofcourse worries dad right away!) around the Dingle peninsula and then
around the Ring of Kerry, on to Cork for two nights and then to Dublin
for four nights. Of the 20 days she was there the weather was bad on
only two! She said she had blue sky and perfect weather much of the
time. She took 2 rolls of film the first three days and 3 rolls the
next14 days!
One very good piece of advice from the notes was to use the public
transportation in conjunction with biking. She did this twice and it
worked out well.
Dublin reminded her of Boston and she was very comfortable finding her
way around - she did heed the advice of not going out alone at night,
spent two eventless evenings in the hostel; the next two nights she
hooked up with some other travelers and did a literary pub hop, and was
a guest at someone's house for a dinner the next night.
Her biggest surprise was the number of foreigners that lived and worked
in Ireland.
She discovered black pudding and passed up the opportunity to sample;
she never found out the ingredients of white pudding - can someone help.
again thanks to everyone who contributed
