1473.0. "Irish stereotypes" by XSTACY::JLUNDON (http://xagony.ilo.dec.com/~jlundon :-)) Thu Apr 27 1995 06:09

I'd like the beat him around the head with his Irish background ;-).

Comments?

Subj:	[ir-st]: Irish stereotypes

There was some discussion on the list last year about Irish stereotypes. Here's
a new one, being offered by an Irish-American. Columbus, Ohio police responded
to a domestic violence complaint two weeks ago, and were given little welcome
by the husband. He attacked both, injuring one enough so he needed medical
treatment.
Arraigned in court, the accused pleased that he had been born in
Ireland and emigrated to the U.S.; he said he had grown up with a very
strict, conservative upbringing, but with a lot of drinking. He had had
18 beers before the argument with his wife. And he hoped the judge would
take the Irish background into consideration in the case.
The judge asked one ironic question which was either not answered
or whose answer was unreported: "Is it the custom in Ireland to attack
the police?"
And the Irish background seemed to have little effect on the
sentencing.
It was a new angle to me--I'd never heard of any prisoner making
that kind of plea before.

crazy!...Hope he got locked away....reminds me of a case here where a chap
was up for a variety of charges of assault and robbery..he was a woeful
    case and bad news.

Judge asked had anybosy anything to say in his defence and his brother
shouted that they guy was a good worker..a decent man and wouldn't harm
a fly..judge gave the guy a sentence and his brother 2 months for
    contempt and lying.
