1472.0. "Irish Pub in Stow MA." by CTHQ::COADY () Wed Apr 19 1995 11:59

An "Irish Pub" has opened in the Stow Ma. Its in the Star Market shopping
mall. Its on Rte 117, about half way between Maynard and 117/495 junction,
or very close to the Stow (OGO) facility. It was known the Coffee/Tea and
Melody place and had Irish breakfasts etc.

The owner is called O'Hanlon (I think he is Irish) and he is trying to create
an "authentic" setting. He has Guinness and Murphys on tap and has folk music
on a regular basis.

I believe he has some Sunday afternoon family sessions etc.

Of course Stow is not exactly the center of the universe, but its nice
to have something closer than Boston.

1472.1More on Coffee Tea and MelodyCTHQ::ROGERSThu May 11 1995 08:5014
    I stopped in this morning to ask about the opening time for the pub. I
    was told it was technically already open (7am)...now isn't that
    convenient??? For most of the rest of us, the pub is open for lunch at
    which time they serve sandwiches.

    Traditional sessions are held Sundays at 3pm.

    They sell a variety of muffins, scones, flavored coffee, etc. and a
    pretty good assortment of candy bars like Crunchies, Flakes, Moro bars,
    etc. along with Jams, jellies, Irish tea, rashers even whole Irish
    hams. It's an interesting concept having a breakfast/lunch counter,
    Irish convenience store and pub all under one roof.

1472.2Also Guinness & Murphys on Tap.CTHQ::COADYThu May 11 1995 11:2911

    Jee Rick; at 7am .... I know things are tough around here, but that
    reminds me of the finishing the grave-yard shift and heading to the
    Harbour Bar at 7 am.

    Other the candies they also have Guinness and Murphys on tap, plus a
    large selection beers.

    Pity the don't do an "Irish Pub lunch"

    Now thats a good one -) -)...Must turn that around and use it..

    " I stopped by to see what time the pub closed, dear.."..and I had to
    wait until the end to make sure the were truthful"

    Harbour bar for 7:00am..Lord have mercy..(thats the Galway one I presume)
    Some strange characters use to hang out there....I think its got
    (another) owner recently...

1472.4The ShamrockTALLIS::DARCYAlpha Migration ToolsThu May 11 1995 13:118

    Reminds me of the time I went to NY for St. Paddy's Day some years
    back. We went to the Aquaduct, then saw the Wolfetones play, and then
    onto the Shamrock pub. At 3 am they closed the doors, drew the curtains,
    and locked all of us inside until about 7 am, at which time we exited,
    blinded by the lights, hailed a black taxi, which really wasn't an
    official taxi, just some recent immigrant with a large Ford LTD...
    Ah the memories...
1472.5only one Harbour !CTHQ::COADYThu May 11 1995 16:2210

    re .3

    Yes the Galway, unlike the "hookers" ina previous note there is only
    one real Harbour Bar (or Habah Bah as we say here in Boston :=))

    In the mid-70's it was one lively place at 7am, tho it was often hard
    to get a seat, as some of the "locals" spent all nite there. Sad to
    say but it does feel like 20 years ago .....

    I have vague recollections of that place. I seem to remember sho very
    shady locals. They have been known to sell sheep to unsuspecting
    computer engineers

    Hi Martin; but the sheep seller was your boss - if my memory serves me
    correctly .........

    Hello Gerry,

    My memory is getting bad. Wasn't it Mike who bought the sheep. When
    last heard of he was in Holland. I believe he is still there.

    On the same note is Matt Tynan still around. Boy was there some
    fireworks when that pair got thogether.

Memories(!) of the Harbour..I remember a Tuesday night when set-dancing
was in, playing in a session under the TV (showing a steamy movie, watched
by some shady characters sitting at the bar) with pool tables moved aside
and dancers hitting the floor for a Clare set, and a cloud of smoke(?)
drifting from the bar.. when a character walks in with his bicycle and
a goose on the handlebars, selling the catch of the day...finishing up
with George singing the Green Green Grass of Home on the broome...yes, it
all happened one wet wintry night in the Harbour bar, or did it?....
1472.10it depends !CTHQ::COADYWed May 17 1995 21:005

    re .9 .....

    well it could have happened, but that drift of smoke from the bar has
    dulled a lot of memories
1472.11Green Linnet in Stow tonite.CTHQ::COADYWed Jun 07 1995 10:4411
a group from Galway (I think) Green Linnet are playing in the Coffee, Tea
and Melody at the Stow (Ma) shopping center tonite Wednesday June 7th @ 8pm.

I guess they do traditional Irish and folk music.

This is one of the groups that s headlining at the Irish Festival in
Stonehill this weekend.

It should be a good evening.

    I believe the group is Reel Time (Green Linnet has just released
    their first album). I heard them a couple of weeks ago at the
    Irish Festival at Wolf Trap; good music and, yes, they are from
    around Galway.

    Nancy
1472.13Yes; it is Reel Time !CTHQ::COADYWed Jun 07 1995 16:075

    Your correct; I mis-read the flyer, the name is Reel Time !

    of course the Guinness is still the same .....

    re: .13

    But last night was Murphy's night! I guess Murphy's sponsored
    Reel Time's appearance; at any rate they handed out some
    Murphy's tee shirts and hats during the break. Music was quite
    good and the place was pretty full up. If I overhead correctly,
    Friday nights will no longer be folk music night, but from now
    on will be celtic music night.

1472.15Great for lunch.ESBTST::GREENAWAYTue Jun 20 1995 18:3511

    Went to lunch there around 2 weeks ago. The lunch was very good
    although the selection was a bit limited.
    The Guinness was great (not a bad pint), but it was served in a
    Murphy's glass!!!

    I'd recommend it for lunch and loved to hit a session, but live too far
    away.

    Cheers,
    Paul
1472.16getting betterCTHQ::COADYWed Jun 21 1995 16:108

    Yeah, I find the lunch a bit limited also. Trying to convince him to
    do a "pilot" of Irish Pub lunches; maybe for winter.

    Place is really begining to fill up in the evenings, a few weeks ago I
    was lucky to see 2/3 people in the bar, last week on Wed eve ther was
    10/12 people and upto 20 on Thursday eve. I guess some of the "A
    Capella" (sp) bar, across the road, have discovered a real pub.
