1443.0. "Train from Dublin to Galway" by AYOV10::KKEARY () Tue Dec 06 1994 07:36

I am being sent to Galway on business for three days and I will be
travelling sometime before Xmas. I will be flying Ryanair to Dublin
and want to know how good the train service is from Dublin to Galway.
Times, how long it takes etc.

My other option is driving but I would rather take the train if at all
    possible.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give me,

    Kirsty

    Hi Kirsty,

The train service is pretty good between Dublin and Galway.
Trains depart from Hueston Station (two miles or so from
O'Connell Bridge) 4 times daily. The approx. departure times
    are 8AM, 11AM, 2PM and 6.30PM... you'd want to double-check
    these just in case!

From Galway to Dublin the times are 8AM, 11.30AM, 3PMish
and 6PMish... again check out those times to be sure...

    bon voyage,
    Jim.

    Kirsty,

Had just checked this myself a while ago....

In general it takes about 3 hr. There are 4 trains
    daily...
     8:00am 11:00
     11:05 13:50
     14:10 16:55
     18:45 21:15..

By road its about 3 hrs also...normal driving..

I'm glad you said "normal driving" Mick. Kevin Burns
and Mike Hughes made it reportedly in an hour some
    time back. :v)

Just curious, does the train stop anywhere on its
    way to Galway?
1443.4Pardon me boy but is that the cat you knew that chewed you!ESSB::KILBANETue Dec 06 1994 11:5712
The Dublin - Galway train is definitely not an express. There are many stops
along the way and not neccessarily at stations.

A few that spring to mind from Dublin :

Kildare, Portarlington, Tullamore, Clara, Athlone, Ballinasloe, Athenry, Galway.

.It;s a grand trip on a fine day. Beware of the sandwiches though!

Yes thats one for the books....I hear it was just a streak of light
going up that road...he was abit slower going down after galway got
    thrashed in that match....!

It stops ok...In fact its a nice journey down..Athlone,
ballinalose,Clara, Tullamore etc etc..Good thing about Galway station
is that its right in the center of the city...Its a very "missable"
train on the way back as there are a couple of very good pubs just a
stones throw from the station..and one lose track of time very easy. I
recall a journey from galway to DUblin taking a couple of days...and
somewehere on the way we passed through (and passed out!) in Monaghan!

keVin was looking very well on Friday. He muttered something about
being frustrated in not taking part in this year's Dublin City
marathon, and he looked fit enough to do it.

    Put me to shame!

Back in '89 I made it from the Avis Car Park at Dublin Airport to the Great
Southern in Eyre Square in 2hrs 10mins. I was flying and thought this
would have been hard to better .

Imagine my disappointment to find out it's been done in 1hr!!!!!!!!!!!

    Back to the question .....

Kirsty , I would recommend driving as you can go at your own pace and
stop when and where you want. The problem with trains is that you'll
have to get a bus/taxi to Hueston Stn. which adds more time then wait
for a train which takes more time then stop in every little train
station which takes more time etc. etc.

Everyone to their own but I'm afraid I have no patience when travelling
and much prefer the quickest most direct route whenever possible.

I made it in 8 hrs one time from Galway to Dublin. I guess the fat
that we stopped in Oranmore and waited for Burkes to open at 10 am.
didn't help. We also stopped in every other town on the way also.

    An enjoyable trip though.

I don't know if the roads have been upgraded since 1988, but you might
want to consider taking the train! It wasn't the condition of the
roads but the fact that there was a lot of truck traffic on basically
two-lane roads. Thank Gawd for the dual carriageway at Lucan!

The Galway road has been vastly upgraded since 1988. You'd hardly
    recognize some stretches.

Actually Pat the dual carrageway has been extended past
Leixlip,Maynooth and Kilcock. That covers the worst stretch of the
road. It also knocks about half an hour or more off the journey so
snake should have no problem doing dublin-Galway in half an hour now.
I would not like to be in that car.

<Well OK, I'm stretching the truth a bit. First it was in
    a rent-a-car, and it took 1 1/2 hours. I now quote from
    the venerable Mr. Burns...>

"...I believe we left Galway City at 8.40 am and arrived
in Rathfarnham at 10.10 which would be about an hour
and a half from Galway to Dublin. On several occasions
we were doing in excess of 90MPH and other vehicles on
the roadway (including Bus's) were certain to be overtaken
with the Snake at the wheel..."

<editor's note: despite the blazing time records, apparently they
were able to stop 3 times along the route for keVin to have a
black-n-tan, use the facilities, and buy a choc-ice>

...The fiat Ritmo was well equipped. We had plenty of Christy
Moore, Van-the-man, and Mitch Miller tapes for the trek. We
started with a fry at SuperMacs. We had Galway flags hanging
from every orifice of the Ritmo. Our destiny Dublin...

"...We were onroute to Dermot O'Sullivans home, so maybe he
might remember some of the details about when we arrived at
          his house. :-)"

...I have heard the story and these chaps stick to the times.
Personally I know both these chaps are STONE mad at the best of times
-) -) and it wouldn't surprise me at all....

NOt anymore though..theres a witch of a judge in the mid-lands who
takes pleasure in catching people doing such speeds..so you have to be
    careful.

Well after all that I am flying Ryanair Prestwick/Dublin then Aer
Lingus Dublin/Galway so I won't be driving or taking the train.

I'll be over from the 11th - 13th Jan. The next time I'm over on
holiday I will have to drive from Dublin to Galway so that I can see
what you are all talking about.

Can anyone tell me roughly how much a taxi will cost from Galway
    airport to ESSB?

    Thanks

re- cost of the taxi ride...approx #4.00. It's a short trip.

p.s. prestwick has very good prices on duty-free (particularly spirits)
so you may want to stock up...
