ALbert Reynolds has resigned !
He says he is doing it for the sake of the `peace process' and this
comes as a result of the appointment of the Attorney General to the
President of the High Court without the approval of his coalition
partners . They (Dick Spring et al) have all resigned office too .
Fianna Fail are now scrambling for a new leader who can hopefully unite
the coalition again and avoid a general election .
I'll post more as I hear it .

I wonder if this is the end of the story. Today's (UK) papers report
rumours that the failure to extradite the convicted priest was a result
of intervention by a senior Church figure.

if the rumours about church intervention in this case are true then it
will be music to the ears of the unionist politicos. It strengthens
their case about the religious make-up of the South. It saddens me to
see that the church could still be so strong in modern,
outward-looking, pluralistic Ireland.
I would imagine that Bertie Ahern would be the strong favourite to
succeed Albert. It's about time a Dub was in charge, anyway.... 8-]

From what I heard on the radio today it is now acknowledged
that the rumour about Church intervention was false. The
political correspondant (Geraldine Kennedy) went on to say
that she thought the rumour was generated by government TD's
to cause confusion and buy the Taoiseach some time to negotiate
a deal with Dick Spring.
