1412.0. "Converting PAL Videotape to NTSC Format" by CTHQ::ROGERS () Tue Sep 13 1994 08:58

On a recent trip to Ireland, I made the mistake of buying a VHS video
tape in PAL format which, of course, will not play on my VCR here in
the U.S.. All I get is some sound and no picture.

How can I get this tape converted to NTSC format so I can watch it?

I read through topic 505 which was entered back in 1989. Does anyone
have any new information to offer? I'm hoping that prices have come
down since then and some new places have opened up in the greater
Boston area. The tape only cost me about $25 so it doesn't make sense
to spend a small fortune to convert it.

I also checked the VIDEO notesfile but that seems more geared to buying
the hardware to do the conversion rather than buying a conversion
    service from someone.

    I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

    Rick

There's an international video store in Quincy Ma that does conversion
    - i forget the name of it but I'm sure it's in the phone book. They also
    advertise in the Irish Echo.

Other than that methinks you'll have to go back to Ireland to watch it.

As George suggested, there are local conversion services available. As
for price, I recently converted an NTSC tape to PAL (45 minutes) for
$25 Canadian. I think the prices now are around the $25-$35 per hour
    (again, Canadian).

There's a place in Reverve center called Repro. This spring I had
1.5 hr take converted for $30.

Thanks for the information, guys. Paul, I'll give the store in Revere
a try since I live on the North Shore and the prices seem very
    reasonable.

How was the quality of the copy? I have an instructional video so I
guess I could lose some picture quality without too much harm. I would
be more concerned if it were a tape of Irish scenery.

    Thanks again.

1412.6high input qual gets you high output qualESBTST::GREENAWAYFri Sep 16 1994 14:1611
    Rick,

I believe the quality is very good since they use a digitizing machine
    to convert the formats.
The final quality really depends on the input quality. If you have
a high quality original then your copy will be high quality.
I converted an old wedding video that was in poor quality and that's
what I got. A viewable video of the same quality as the original.

    Cheers,
    Paul
1412.7Had tape converted at Repro in RevereCTHQ::ROGERSTue Nov 22 1994 07:5520
Well, at long last, I finally made it to Repro in Revere to get my PAL
format tape converted. As Paul said in .3, the conversion cost $30 for
up to a 2 hour tape. They used a Fuji Super (Extra?) High grade
    videotape for the conversion.

This is a tape on how to play the Bodhran so the quality is fine for
that. I never got to see the original video so I don't know how good
the quality was on the original. Basically the video looks like a home
movie that was shot in front of a fireplace.

I didn't think I would get back to Repro too easily to pick up the
coverted tape so I had them ship it to me via UPS for $2.00 which I
thought was more than worth it.

Well, I learned a lesson for my next trip to Ireland....make sure I
look at the videotape's format. The tape ended up costing me a
total of nearly $60 between the $25 for the tape and $33.50 to convert it.
