1403.3 | There's lLotto | ESSB::KILBANE | | Wed Sep 04 1996 09:40 | 19 |

Achill is the place to be this week, folks, where the search is on to
find the missing lotto ticket worth 2 million punts!
Apparently some Galway lad and his American girlfriend went hill
walking after doing the lotto in Achill and lost the alledged winning
ticket during a moment of passion on the hillside. Lotto fever is now in
the air as dozens of visitors have been combing the hills for the
elusive ticket.( much to the amusement and the bemusement of the locals
who are far too sensible to be carrying on with this tom foolary)
I'm off to Achill for the weekend where the craic is at at least going
to be 89.
Anyway the story was on Sky news this morning so it will run
and run.... until the real winning ticket shows up.

| Des,
in today's Irish Times the post master is reported to believe the
winner is a local who will collect AFTER the All Ireland. The
suggestion is that he doesn't want to spoil preparations for the
football with a lotto hooley. Are there any Achill men on the Mayo
team ?
Achill is magic though, I was up there a few weeks ago...

Kevin,
I hope the story is true and that the local is a relative or an old
friend %^). He sounds like a very cool chap and that 2 mill ticket burning a
hole in his mattress. There will be the mother of all hooleys in
Achill after the AllIreland. Not to be missed.
There are a couple of Achill lads knocking on the door of the senior
squad and that's as close as it gets. Colm Mcmenamin hails from Ternear
a few miles from Achill.
So Kevin have you been advised to put a saving wager on Mayo?

| No final decision yet, but it looks like a hefty saver on Mayo and a
punt on the draw, which would pay up and leave both bets standing. On
reflection, Meath did not score that many against the Dubs and a Mayo
man in here is of the view that the Tyrone men were too small but that
the Mayo lads will be able to look after themselves and give as good as
they get.

BUT don't get bould now, or you will have to invite
James up for the wake...
What I especially liked about Achill is the golf course with the sheep!
Nothing like it since I played in Moate in the 60's :-)

There are lots of stories about the fabled golfing sheep of Achill.
One of which concerned a golfer whose tee off shot was heading for the
river when it got a timely deflection off an unsuspecting sheep and ended
up in the hole. He was so grateful he refused to eat lamb for a month.
Now did you hear about the singing dog in the Slievemore Hotel?

Hello KeVin
Sorry for your trouble this year but Clare hurlers will be back!
Mick,
The canine Caruso had indeed 4 legs and used to accompany his master's
voice in the Slievemore Hotel on a nightly basis. The mutt was
certainly no Pavrotti but was a distinct improvement on his master's
singing and thus was a roaring success.
I didn't realise the extent of it's fame until I found myself in
O'Briens bar in New Orleans a few years ago. It being a friendly place
I soon found myself in conversation with a chap from Tennessee who had
visited Ireland and when I told him I was from Achill he almost fell
off his chair and pleaded with me to tell the others in the bar about
the singing dog.
Apparently when he returned to the US from his Irish trip and told them
the story nobody believed him.
Needless to say I did'nt have to buy too many drinks that night.

I dunno, the decay is setting in, it will be another 80 years.
Anthony Daly has opened a sports shop in O'Connell Street, Ennis, and I
wandered in to become the very first customer last Friday. He tipped Wexford
to win... I was too polite to complain about that fluke goal in the
last few minutes :-)
After the singing dog, can you tell us about the prayer hall and the
moving mountains please. Also, when did they close the railway to
Achill Sound?

The prayer hall I believe you are referring is the House of Prayer.
The stigmata (the wounds of Christ) appeared on Christine Gallagher
and she was instucted by the Virgin Mary to go to Achill and set up the
aforementioned house. There has been a lot of attention in the media
about this even outside Ireland including a BBC programme. Coach loads
have been arriving in Achill from all over Ireland. She has been
denounced by the local parish priest who probably sees a lot of his
influence slipping.
As regards moving mountains, I'm not so sure. The only moving mountain
of late is Croughan where the missing lotto ticket is supposed to be.
Moving due to the sheer number of walkers searching for the elusive
2 million. Maybe you are thinking of moving statues, a Cork phenominan.
The Achill railway line was closed in the 40's though I could be wrong.
