1347.0. "Achill" by TINCUP::AGUE (DTN-592-4939, 719-598-3498(SSL)) Wed Mar 16 1994 22:35

My wife and I have rented a house for a week in the Achill area this
August. Since we haven't been to that area, we're looking for some
pointers on what to do and see.

From are last trip to Ireland, I have to admit that our main interests
are scenic sightseeing, pubs, Irish Music and Guiness.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    -- Jim

(Mods: move, if you think Achill doesn't deserve its own note.)

(Eastie, thanks for the Alamo info, we're gonna use it. You're so
much saner in this conference. %^)

    Achill! :)

It was one of the prettiest places I visited last summer! :) Of course
I was shown around by a native, right Des?!?!

Be sure to visit the cliffs, the highest/steepest in all of Europe.
Go walk the beaches, mostly rocky.
The pubs were plentiful and lively.

And although I didn't have the time, I hear there are fishing and
    sailing opportunities too.

			      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Oh no ! Here we go again with that "Irish poetic licence". What's your
source of information ? If it is from an Irish tourist guide then please
take it with a liberal helping of salt. Take a look at the cliffs on the
north face of Ben Nevis, the cliffs of Northern Majorca, the cliffs of the
Amalfi coast in Italy, the west coast of the former Yugoslavia... It seems
quite unlikely that a country which has only one mountain over 3,000 ft
would have the highest cliffs in Europe !

When I was there they tried to tell me that the MacGillicuddy's (sp?)
Reeks were the oldest in Europe. If that is true then they share that claim
with the Cairngorms and the mountains of Scandinavia but these didn't even
get a mention.

They also tried to tell me that they invented everything from whisky to
potatoes. I'll grant you that they invented "whiskey" but NOT the real
stuff :-)

Eddie.

    .3 Right Jen!!

    Jim,

I'm a native of Achill and am more than happy to point you in the right
direction for a bit of caint, ceol agus craic. If you are arriving in early
August then you will be there for Scoil Acla which is an annual Summer
School celebrating the Island's customs and traditions. There are
traditional music workshops so if you are musically inclined then bring
    along an instrument!

There are lots of sandy beaches , most notable ones being Keem Bay,
Golden Strand in Dugort and the beach in Keel. There are 2 Outdoor
Persuit centres which cater for surfing (great conditions for surfing
on Keel beach) wind surfing, canoeing and hill walking.

The Atlantic Drive, not a local golf range but a hair raising drive
along the south west coast, is truly spectacular. Check out the
Deserted Village and the Megalithic Tombs at Dugort.

If you need any further info contact me off line if you wish.

Oh ..and there are a few pubs there as well.... %^)

The attached is an excerpt from some EMAIL I received from another Celt
noter. I felt that it had some great information that needed to be
recorded here, for all time, regarding Pubs in the Achilles.

Since I'm sure that the Celt noter-author of the attachment wants it
publicly known how much pain-staking, extensive, time-consuming,
endless hours of research he has made of the Achill pubs, I'll leave
the attachment anonymous, for now. %^)

    -------------------
... there is good music and interesting pubs to be found, it
just takes a little bit of seeking and you shall find.

There are lots of pubs on the Island and here are some worth checking out:

The Annex Pub in Keel. Usually good trad Irish here.
The Minean View (Keel) Great pint of Guinness. Ask for a shamrock in your
 pint! Sometimes good music.
The Village Inn (Keel) Good craic.

McMannamins Pub and Restaurant (Dugort) Run by Tony and Karen. Tell them
 I sent you.

Slievemore Hotel. (Dugort) Music at weekends which might not be all that
 great. Good food.

The Valley House Bar and Hostel.(The Valley) Good sing song here which could
start at 1.am and goes on sometimes til 5am. Beware of drive up to the pub
and beware of eccentric owner! Good pint though!

Ted Lavelles (Cashel) Good pub for cards. Also disco at weekends if you feel
 like dancin.

The Pub (Dooagh) a.k.a. Lourdies. Good craic. Early hours drinkin. Watch out
for the Guards! Probably will have music.

The Atlantic Hotel. (Dooagh) Music in the bar. Good food.

Alice's Bar (Achill Sound) Good pint, and food.

Where are you staying? Have you much information on things to do and places
 to see?

1347.11Achill Trip reportTINCUP::AGUEDTN-592-4939, 719-598-3498(SSL)Wed Sep 14 1994 00:2375
We're back from a 2.5 week vacation in Ireland. We spent one week on
Achill Island. For me, the week at Achill was the best part of the
vacation. Coming in second and third were the nights at Doolin and
    Dingle.

We stayed in a house (self-catering, as they say over there) in Achill
Sound that is owned by an attorney in Colorado Springs and managed by
his cousins, John and Mary McGinty of Saila (Saula), Achill Island.
The house sleeps 7 people comfortably in four bedrooms and is located
near the bridge to the Island. Highly recommended.

Pubs: To the earlier lists provided, I have to add McLoughlins Pub in
Achill Sound as a place to go. Great pint of Guinness, good craic.
The weekend we arrived, they had hired a band out of the Dublin area
named Wallop The Cat. Although amplified, they still were one of the
better "traditional Irish music" groups we heard during our 2+ week
stay. They also let the audience get on the stage and perform. About
closing, one of the local Guarda got up with his guitar and sang.
That was the signal that McLoughlin's was going to be open very late.

A second to the Annexe Inn pub, good Guinness and good music. We had a
friend from Millstreet, County Cork, that sang one number with the ad hoc
group. She silenced the crowd until finished, at which time they
responded with great applause. Be wary of the bar at the Achill Sound
Hotel. Bad Guinness, worse music, at least the night we were there.

    Sites to See:

Atlantic View Drive, for sure the southeast portion.

Drive to the top of Minaun Heights. On a windy day, if you stand on
the west side of the 1500 foot ridge, you feel like lift off is about
to occur. We wanted to be up there and experience a heavy mist, but
the weather was just too good the week we were there.

Keem Beach at the far western end of the Island. Great place on a
    sunny day.

The Deserted Village. Almost a mystical place. This is a village in
the center of the island that was deserted in the mid-1800's, no one
knows for sure why. All that remains is a linear arrangement of about
50 one-room stone houses, no roofs (thatch long gone), and stone sides
    about 60% still intact.

Sister Christine's Catholic Evangelic Center. I doubt if this is its
official name, and I'm not really recommending it as a stop on your
tour, but since it is now a phenomena on Achill, I thought I'd mention
it. Christine is a 50ish, grandmother from County Mayo that recently
had a major religious experience (stigmata, Mary visions). Divine
guidance has caused her to purchase a convent in near ruins, refurbish
it to contain a chapel and gift shop.

Mass is held daily. Christine, because of secular duties (wife,
grandmother), is present only on weekends where you might be able to
find her healing someone, laying on the floor in a motionless trance,
or bleeding from the head. If you happen to miss Christine, her
sermons on tape can be bought from the gift shop for 5 punts each.

The permanent residents don't know what to make of her. They all say
she is great for business. Dozens of tour busses arrive daily on
weekends. The manager of of the Achill Sound Hotel (four block walk)
states that before her arrival, his hotel was open only 4 maybe 5
months during the summer. Last year, he stayed open the entire year,
is booked this year through November, and expects to stay booked to
    next summer.

    -------------------

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Achill. I'd like to thank Des and
others for their input on what to see and do while there. We were
there at a time when vacationers had all but disappeared. We were
Yanks that stuck out like sore thumbs that got to know many of the
permanent residents. We felt welcomed by all.

A whole week there and no mist? Are you sure it was Achill you were on %")

Well Jim you picked the right time to visit Achill as the weather has been
very good for the past month or so. Lots of sunny days and great natural
    light much appreciated by artists.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay on the Island and as they say here in

There is a magazine,Muintir Acla, published in Achill on a quarterly
basis which might be of interest to anyone who has visited Achill or
    who plans to visit.

If you would like more details you can contact Sile A Nic Aodha who
is the Editor and her address is Bullsmouth, Achill Island, County Mayo
Ireland. She is always keen on articles written about Achill whether by
natives or by visitors. So how about it Jim, George et al?
