1334.0. "Want to own a Pub ??" by HILL16::BURNS (ANCLR) Mon Feb 21 1994 08:31

GUINNESS IMPORT COMPANY OFFERS ST. PATRICK'S DAY 'WIN YOUR OWN PUB IN
IRELAND'CONTEST STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Harp, James
Joyce, storytelling, the neighborhood pub, step dancing and Guinness are all
authentic pieces of Irish culture. And to celebrate that most revered of
Irish holidays -- St. Patrick's Day -- Guinness, Ireland's national drink
since 1850, will offer someone the opportunity to own a genuine "piece" of
 the Emerald Isle.

According to Todd Stevenson, Group Marketing Director of Guinness for
Guinness Import Company, "The Guinness Import Company will search the
country for the one adult who deserves to actually own a coveted piece of
Irish heritage Connie Doolan's Pub, an authentic Irish pub in the historic
harbor town of Cobh, County Cork, Ireland -- as part of our national "Win
Your Own Pub in Ireland" contest."

"Tell Us About Your Perfect Pint of Guinness..." Where legal, Guinness will
invite consumers 21 and older to follow in the tradition of Irish writers
such as Joyce, Yeats and Swift by penning a description of their "perfect
pint of Guinness in 50 words or less." Entries will be available at both on-
and off-premise locations through March 24 and will be judged on the basis
of originality, relevance to Guinness, appeal and clarity. Entries can be
mailed to: Guinness "Win Your own Pub in Ireland" contest, PMI Station, P.O.
 Box 3575, Southbury, CT 06488-3575.

Ten finalists will be chosen and sent to Cobh, courtesy of Aer Lingus.
During the week of May 15, the 10 finalists will compete on-site at Connie
Doolan's for ownership of the pub. They will compete in pub games and tests
of bartending skills, as well as an oral essay competition.

The Grand Prize One deserving consumer will win ownership of Connie Doolan's
Pub, located on West Beach in the historic town of Cobh (pronounced "cove").
Connie Doolan's Pub overlooks Cork Harbor, the largest natural harbor in the
world. The pub's first and second floors house two traditional Irish bars,
while its third and fourth levels include seven guest rooms. The pub was
refurbished in 1993 with modern accommodations, but its legendary character
 and intimacy still remain.

The ultimate winner of Connie Doolan's Pub will be chosen by a panel of
judges, including Irish publicans and barmen.

This is the kind of thing that happens when you don't keep you're
Guinness a/c in the black (no pun intended). They go and raffle the
place out from under you're feet. Another Irish solution to an Irish
problem. Actually reminds me of a Christmas Eve at home about 10 years
ago, the Guinness truck was making the last deliveries before
Christmas and sure it being the season that was in it, he got a
half-one in every house he was in. On the way home, he rammed the Garda
squad car in the middle of the town. The squad was a writeoff but the
Guinness lorry was OK. Talk about going out in style.

Might the problem also be that it's a little difficult to sell Guinness

    keVin,

funnily enough Guinness is quite popular in Cork. When I lived there, I
used to drink in a pub on the Northside (with the "Norries") and all the
locals drank Guinness or Beamish (another Cork brewed stout). Very few
were Murphys drinkers even though we were only a stones-throw from the
Brewery. Beamish was popular as it was only #1.20 a pint as opposed to
#1.50 a pint for Guinness. I could never quite figure out why Murphy's
    was'nt more popular.

Up to last Friday, there have only been around 6,000 entries for this
competition. The best three thousand (according to Saturday's paper)
will be flown to Cork in May for a grand final. Even though I suspect
that there may have been an inadvertant zero added to the number of
finalists, it still gives a witty entrant a fiar chance of winning a
free trip to Ireland in May.

1334.9Another Pub Giveaway by GuinnessCTHQ::ROGERSTue Mar 07 1995 07:5316
Guinness is giving away another pub in Ireland this year. Just out of
curiosity, has anyone ever come across entry forms for this contest
either this year or last? It seems as though bars or stores selling
draft Guinness should have the entry forms but I have not found that to
    be the case.

By the way, I visited Connie Doolan's pub last summer and had an
opportunity to read the winning essay from last year's contest as well
as those of the other finalists. The winning essay was good but I was
not impressed with the others. Some of the people openly admitted that
they spent a half hour working on the essay so it may be possible to
at least get a free trip to Ireland to participate in the pub games
portion of the contest. I think I'll give it a shot anyway.

I meant to apply last year and forgot about it. I believe some
fellow from Braintree Mass won it. That was the pub in Cobh wasn't
it? Cobh is a beautiful city.

Where is the new pub from this time? Hopefully Galway ;v)

Yes Connie Doolan's Pub is located in Cobh. The pub has been
completely remodeled and is quite a nice place and so is the city.
Cobh would have been an ideal location for us because my wife's
relatives live within an hour of there. This year's pub is in Bantry
which we also visited last summer. Too bad I didn't know about the
contest...I could have checked out the pub then.

A friend gave me an entry form this weekend. I'll post the
rules and addresses here tonight or tomorrow.

And no, you don't need an official entry form...

50 words is not a lot - i think they're looking more for
    slogans than novels.

If you don't want the pub (why I don't know) you can get
    $100,000 instead.
