1326.1 | check into Universities! | STOWOA::OROURKE | RUN-BY_FRUITING | Mon Feb 07 1994 16:15 | 10 |

Does your brother have any access to an Irish University? Many of the
schools in the U.S. are linked to the INTERNET and we write to other
Colleges/Universities all over the World. For example I have a pen pal
in school in Bristol, England.
The bonus is that with a college account access is 'free'! :)

1326.2 | US Modems work great.. | ADISSW::SMYTH | | Mon Feb 07 1994 18:50 | 4 |
| US modems do work on Irish telephone lines, in fact Ireland adopted the
US standard on telecomms quite a while back (RJ11 plugs, dialing
frequencies, durations etc). Officially the modems are
supposed to have European safety certification, but they work fine.

Actually he may have access to a college as he teaches parttime, thats
a good idea. I'll get him a cheapo modem in US and he can dial in from
home and use the college connection - if they have one.
If not, looks like Ireland Online (from what I hear) is a reasonable
alternative.
Thanks.

1326.4 | IOL better than CIS; remember, no graphics! | OPENED::LIBOVE | | Wed Feb 09 1994 09:33 | 12 |
| Ireland On-Line will be better than CompuServe, as it has full direct internet
access, whereas CompuServe (I think) only gateways mail. Some other commercial
services may also provide full internet access.
In any case, unless your brother is going to set up a SLIP link (much more
expensive than a dial-up account), he will not get internet graphics like the
World Wide Web, which severely curtails the value of that particular service.
Anyway, get him on-line! :-)
