1326.0. "Ireland via electronic network(s) ?" by CTHQ::COADY () Mon Feb 07 1994 13:58

I have a question on e-mail connections in Ireland. I would like to
communicate with my brother via Internet and also give him access to the
World Wide Web etc. He is computer literate, tho not network literate.

He lives and works in Dublin, but his company has no Internet connection
that he

I have questions like :
1) What options are available today and what are the approx costs ;
		IRELAND ONLINE vs COMPUSERVE vs OTHER OPTIONS
2) What price are external modems in Ireland ?, would a US modem work
   with the proper 240 volt power feed ?
3) Can one get a direct Internet account in Ireland (like Delphi in US)

And any other issues that are relevant ..........

Thanks in advance

1326.1check into Universities!STOWOA::OROURKERUN-BY_FRUITINGMon Feb 07 1994 16:1510

    Does your brother have any access to an Irish University? Many of the
    schools in the U.S. are linked to the INTERNET and we write to other
    Colleges/Universities all over the World. For example I have a pen pal
    in school in Bristol, England.

    The bonus is that with a college account access is 'free'! :)

1326.2US Modems work great..ADISSW::SMYTHMon Feb 07 1994 18:504
    US modems do work on Irish telephone lines, in fact Ireland adopted the
    US standard on telecomms quite a while back (RJ11 plugs, dialing
    frequencies, durations etc). Officially the modems are
    supposed to have European safety certification, but they work fine.
1326.3thats a possibility ...CTHQ::COADYTue Feb 08 1994 08:519

    Actually he may have access to a college as he teaches parttime, thats
    a good idea. I'll get him a cheapo modem in US and he can dial in from
    home and use the college connection - if they have one.

    If not, looks like Ireland Online (from what I hear) is a reasonable
    alternative.

    Thanks.
1326.4IOL better than CIS; remember, no graphics!OPENED::LIBOVEWed Feb 09 1994 09:3312
Ireland On-Line will be better than CompuServe, as it has full direct internet
access, whereas CompuServe (I think) only gateways mail. Some other commercial
services may also provide full internet access.

In any case, unless your brother is going to set up a SLIP link (much more
expensive than a dial-up account), he will not get internet graphics like the
World Wide Web, which severely curtails the value of that particular service.

Anyway, get him on-line! :-)
