Answers to questions so serious are not to be taken so lightly. How
would you define 'good'? How would you define "investment"? Would
you take offense to the title track saying 'Only a woman's heart
can...'???

| Clannad's new recording, entitled "Banba" is out and available in the
U.S. pretty good stuff. The C.D. includes the "love theme" from The
Last of the Mohicans as well as some really nice Gaelic stuff, more
than in the past few albums. Evidently Pol has gone off to do
something else as well because his name does not appear on the record
though there does not seem to be a significant impact, brother Ciaran
seems to have picked up the slack.
Also, Enya's "Shepherd Moons" although hardly new, is really neat and
has some very nice tracks, some with very interesting "tribal" rhythms
and feelings to them.
Good records, what a family.

The big winners were The Rankin Family from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
They won a Juno in each of the following categories:
Best Country Group (NO, NOT country and western)
Best Group
Best Single ("Fare Thee Well, Love")
Canadian Entertainer of the Year
One of the songs that they performed on stage last night was in Gaelic
(I can't tell whether it was Irish or Scot, but since they're from Cape
Breton it was probably Scot), and it brought the house down!

yeah, I think e concentrates on writing music, Tina Turner has recorded
some of his stuff; including her #1 Private Dancer (late '80s), and he
also made mega-bucks from that.
That said, I think he has had only a few really great recordings (like
the one mentioned) I always felt that he tended to sound the same after
a while, after listening to a CD I often found it hard to distinguish
any change in songs, tempo etc .... something like the trap that Mary
Chapin-Carpenter is falling into (in my opinion).

Cait O'Riordan who was in The Pogues, left and married Elvis Costello is
definitely not the lead singer with The Cranberries.
Re.24
Recent happenings on the Galway music scene includes some excellent gigs in
Roisin Dub's. On monday night The Holmes Brothers, who are featured on Van the
Man's latest live offering, played a great set of Soul, Gospel, and Blues. Other
recent gigs there featured Roy Harper, Butch Hancock, Rosie Florres, and Mamou
a s**t kicking cajun band from Louisiana (where elsa?). Coming soon Iris Dement,
John Martyn (yeah he still is gigging).
A new venue has opened called GPO, a sort of jazz club for the 90's. It's
located where Kno Kno's used to be. James Taylor Quartet, a fine Jazz combo and
absolutely no relation to Sweet Baby James.
All you old rockers pining for the days of Thin Lizzy et al, could do worse than
check out Therapy?, a happening 3 piece from Larne. Their last but 1 album
Screamager is a classic but LOUD!
Finally Shane McGowan (yep he's still alive and kicking)and his new band
the Popes play in Tuam next week. Sounds like a receipe for a wild wild night!
Keep on rockin,

| Sorry to disagree, I think the VM double live is a waste of money.
While it has its moments it follows a disturbing pattern of high
quantity/low quality stuff from Morrision in recent years. Must be to
pay for the high prices in Dublin's trendy night clubs;-). This is the
second double album in a few years, there's hardly anything new on it
and well Brian Kennedy is a matter of taste. If it had been distilled
to 40 or so minutes I think it would have been worthwhile.

former Miss Ireland, are regulars on the Dublin club scene. He has done a Point
Chritmas gig the last few years but no sign of it happening this year.
Van has been getting away with murder for years. All this MOR repetitive
nonsense sounds more like Chris De Bloody Burgh than the Man who produced
such classics as Beautiful Vision, Wavelength etc. Laughing and joking with
the audience doesnt sound like the Man at all. Oh for the days when he;d storm
off stage at the merest hint of a heckle from the audience. %^)
He's even getting up Shane McGowan's nose as a line from a song on Shane's latest
album testifies " and the fat monk sings Gloria"...
Maybe a spell cleaning windows might get those creative juices flowing again.

| OK, I admit to being bored with the umpteenth live version of
G_L_O_R_I_A. And even "It's A Man's World" gets a bit tedious toward
the end.
But, come on, we're talking about a LIVE recording which would
naturaly cover tunes we already know and love.
Now, if the next studio stuff comes out and doesn't hit the mark
then slam away.
I just think Van and that band cranked out some of the best R&B
for those shows(as well as the show I caught just before this recording
at The Point ;^)) that I've heard for years. IMHO of course. :^)
That said, I too would like to see him come up with something new that
equals his earlier efforts.
Gotta say I was impressed by Brian Kennedy's performance at the Ardilaun

I'm a big Van fan, and I got to say that I don't like the new live one
much. Although one song I do play on it is "TUPELO HONEY" with Brian
and Van sharing the vocals - nearly worth buying the cd for this track
alone!
If it's live Van you want - "Live in LA & London" (1972?) is classic
stuff, and "Live at the Belfast Opera house" is good too!
Brian Kennedy is a good addition to his line-up - although it's a
shame he (Brian) couldn't make a breakthrough on his own. I saw him
live a couple of times and really enjoyed him.
BTW, Paul Brady has a "Best of.." album which is well worth

Hello, I highly recommend Sen Tyrell's CD, 'Cry of a Dreamer';
it's the best thing I've heard for ages. He's been around a long
time but I think this is his first solo release; particularly
good are the setting to music of John Boyle O'Reilly's poems.
Interesting comments on the Van the man - he's always put out
loads of records, and only one out of every three or four really
seems to connect with me. I think the last great one he did was
'Enlightenment', but I wouldn't be surprised if he follows the
last couple of 'dodgy' ones with another great one.
Does anyone know if Peter Kennedy has a solo release out ?
Personally I'm not that wild about him, but I have a friend who
was really taken with him on Van's tour earlier this year, and I
was thinking of getting her the tape as a Christmas present. I'm
sure he had an LP out a couple of years ago, but so far I've had
no luck tracking it down - I'd be grateful for any leads.
thanks

| I'll second that recommend of Sen Tyrell's CD, though I haven't

listening to him with Liam Lewis on fiddle at the Lisheen Bar.
That was during the winter of 92/93. He now(I think) performs
Sunday's @5:00pm at the Roisin Dubh(sp) with a 4 or 5 piece band.
A brilliant voice and his choice of material is excellent. Liam is
an excellent fiddle player as well.
I also heard him on the radio programme A Celtic Sojourn (WGBH Boston)
last Sunday. It was a cut from a Davey Spillane album on which he
provided the vocals.
Brian Kennedy does have a recording (or two?) out but I'm at a loss
as to the tiltle. He also spoke of a new recording coming out when
I saw him perform last(july).
Does anyone know where I can get the Sen Tyrell CD in the Boston

in this area?

Where are you based ?. Several stores in Boston; Tower and HMV both
stock the CD's.
I'll check the labels on disks later and post them tomorrow, if someone
hasn't already done so.

| I'm from Calgary Alberta and the HMV's up here don't have either of
them and there is no Tower stores here (so I'd really appreciate the info).

1263.59 | fine art of busking | EASE::KEYES | Waiting for an alibi | Mon Jan 08 1996 12:32 | 18 |
|
..some of the best musicians can be seen busking around the main
streets of cities and towns...Some really good ones on Grafton street
here in dublin...However alot of people are now complaining that this
is really a type of "begging" and should be banned....which would be a
disgrace.
however it can go overboard..and sometimes it gets abit out of hand..2
cases in the 'west'...a chap was fined 500 quid for nuisance noise..
what he was doing was described as "beating the Shite out of a metal
bucket with a stick"..and another cahp got a 1500 quid fine for
going around taking cigatettes out of folks mouths..with an 8 foot
whip..in ballinasloe..where else -)
