1254.0. "Road Bowls ?" by VYGER::RENNISONM (Spherical - and in the plural) Wed Aug 04 1993 08:44

An article in yesterday's Glasgow Herlad described a game called Road
Bowls. It is supposedly centred in Cork and Armagh and involves hurling
metal objects up and down country lanes. The article indicated that the
"Corkies" were vastly superior to Armagh.

My initial reaction was to think it was all a wind-up. The article was
written by the Herald diarist Tom Shields whose twice-weekly spot is a
collection of amusing stories or reports, usually from Scotland but this
week from Ireland. His collumn has included more than one wind-up in the
past.

Can anyone confirm the existence of such a past-time and if so, give me
some details ?

Thanks.....Mark

    Mark,

    No it is not a wind up...I think its called curling....As you say it
    does involve bowling metal objects down country lanes. I have never
    actually attended one of these events...Cork is indeed the most popular
    place for it. Its often played from town to town.

    Maybe somebody has the rules of this game?...

1254.2It's called BOWLINGBERN02::BYRNEWed Aug 04 1993 09:3712
    It's called BOWLING and the idea is to have start and finish points and
    the person or team to reach the end with least number of throws wins.

    The bowl is a metal ball about the size of a sliothar or tennis ball -
    don't get in the way of the bowlers.

    In fact there's a pub on the Northside of Cork called "The Bowlers
    Rest" - guess what they do there.

    Oh, the nostalgia !!!

1254.3its Bowel-ingCTHQ::COADYWed Aug 04 1993 12:244

    Well actually one needs to put the "cork accent" on it, therefore it
    sounds more like " Bowel-ing"; which ......... no I'll leave it.
1254.4Don't even try ....BERN02::BYRNEThu Aug 05 1993 03:173
    Nobody but a Cork person could pronounce it properly :)

    My old Granny used to make "bowels" of jelly, but then, she was from
    Tipperary.

    I have just returned from a touring holiday in Ireland and I saw this
    actually being played. I didn't know what was going on at the time but
    there were upwards of 10 men throwing a metal ball down the road and
    marking its landing place with clumps of grass.

    This happened near Cork between Kinsale and Bandon.

    What, in Innishannon?

1254.8Maybe between Innishannon & KinsaleIRNBRU::EDDIEEddie McInally, FIS, Ayr. 823-3537Fri Aug 06 1993 04:544
    If Innishannon is the place between Kinsale & Bandon as I think it is
    then the bowling may have taken place between Kinsale and Innishannon.
    This event did not take place in the town but along a country road so
    I'm not 100% sure of where we were at the time.

    Innishannon is where the road to Bandon from Cork crosses the River
    Bandon. If you were going North from Kinsale and the river was on your
    left, it was probably Innishannon. As this is where my Grandmother
    came from it's one of the few places in Ireland whose topography I can
    picture relatively well.

    If Ballinadee rings a bell, you were on the west bank of the Bandon
    River, between Kinsale and Inishannon.
