Who was the first Republician Mayor of Cork ? (Hint: Not Terance MacSwiney)

| Oh, keVin, keVin! You're such a tease!
But I wouldn't refer to him as a Republican (re: Democrat). He was a
member of the Volunteers in Cork and responsible (along with his
second-in-command, Terence MacSwiney) for the `revolving risings'.
When the municipal elections were held on 15 January 1920, he was
elected councilman for Cork City with MacSwiney. He became Mayor of
Cork and made MacSwiney his deputy.
On 20 March 1920, he was shot dead, in front of his wife, in his bed by
`agents' of the RIC. Interestingly, a year later the Lord Mayor of
Limerick was also murdered under similar circumstances - he too had
nationalist sympathies.
And who was `he'...

1234.11 | Legislative Union | SCOTTC::MARSHALL | Spitfire Drivers Do It Topless | Tue Aug 24 1993 08:12 | 14 |
| Hi,
Not exactly trivia, but I couldn't find a suitable topic and it didn't seem
to warrant a whole new topic...
On the back of the Irish 20 note is an extract from a document signed by
Daniel O'Connell, and dated 1845, pledging to seek the repeal the Legislative
Union.
What exactly is the Legislative Union? I guess it was some Governmental system
imposed on Ireland by Westminster, but I'm a bit fuzzy about these things...
Thanks for any info,
Scott

parliament abolishing the Irish parliament and instead giving
representation for Irish people in Westminster.
