1226.0. "Another attempt on Gerry Adam's life" by TALLIS::DARCY (Alpha Migration Tools) Wed Jun 16 1993 16:47
BELFAST, Northern Ireland (UPI) -- Protestant paramilitaries launched
a bomb attack Wednesday on the home of Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams.
The device, believed to be a grenade, was thrown at the front door of
Adam's home in the heart of nationalist west Belfast shortly after
midnight.
Minor damage was caused to the porch but Adams's wife and son who
were in the home at the time escaped unhurt. They were reported to be
``badly shaken.''
Adams was not home at the time of the blast but the organization
issued a statement condemning the incident as another sectarian attack.
No organization immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Sinn Fein Belfast councillor Alex Maskey warned party members to be
on guard against further attacks. It was the second such incident on a
Sinn Fein member within 24 hours and the latest in a series of attacks
which have left 21 members dead at the hands of Protestant
paramilitaries since 1974.
The attacks come in the wake of a gun attack on the home of a Sinn
Fein election agent in the village of Castlewellan, 20 miles (32 km)
south of Belfast. Shots were fired through a window but nobody was
injured.
It is the second time Adams has escaped an attempt on his life. Ten
years ago gunmen opened fire on his car in the centre of Belfast. He
escaped with minor injuries.
