1205.0. "Historical/Cultural Tourism in Connemara" by MACNAS::RASMUSSEN () Mon Apr 19 1993 05:02
Folks,
Remember Toby Joyce - the historical expert who regularly participated
in various Notesfiles.
Well Toby has left Digital Galway and has teamed up with Michael
Gibbons, a leading Irish Archaeologist to form a new tourism service
(with a difference) in the West of Ireland.
Their tourism service is to provide interested visitors to the Galway
and Connemara regions with a range of historical/cultural tours. These
tours can be organised to cater for individal's or group's needs. In
some places, people may like to simply get advice on what to see or
in other cases, people may like to have a local guide give them a tour
(even an aerial one !). If people desire, they can also arrange slide
shows.
Luckily, Galway and Connemara are very fortunate in that the regions
are very rich in pre-historical monuments, celtic forts, norman castles
early christian churches and viking settlement. As well as that, the
areas are closely linked with some of Ireland's greatest writers and
patriots such as James Joyce, James Synge, W.B. Yeats and Padraig
Pearse. Geologists/Naturalists say no more, the Burren, Aran Islands
and peat bogs are all in close proximity.
