1184.0. "NEW IRISH FLAG" by FILTON::ONEILL (MIKE O'NEILL) Tue Feb 09 1993 09:39

    I was thinking today that when Ireland is again united should the Irish
    have a new national flag or should the tricolour with its original
    significance remain. I'm sure there aren't many of you out there who
    don't know what the Irish Tricolour means but just in case. Green is
    for the Republic in the south, Orange for the Orangemen (Unionists) in
    the North and White for peace between the two communities. Though this
    flag has a deep and true meaning in today's climate, surely in a United
    Ireland being a Unionist will have little or no meaning and therefore
    the Green,White and Orange will have lost some of the meaning the
    originator intended.

    As a suggestion for the new flag, how about a white backround with a
    gold celtic harp in the middle standing on a bed of shamrock. Or, a
    green backround with a motif in the top left-hand corner made up of the
    emblem of each province. Or how about a green backround with a Red Hand
    and "Laimh Dearg Eirinn" underneath it ;-).

    Gerry,

    That one was way below the belt. BTW I hear that a certain Restaraunt
    overlooking the river Suir has gone bankrupt. It must have been your
    departure which caused that.
