1176.0. "Trip to Ireland (Please God!)" by KLAATU::MWALSH () Wed Jan 27 1993 13:23

    I would like to accompany my husband on a vacation to Ireland
    the end of May (possibly the 30th if there's an Aer Lingus Flight).
    However, I have never flown and am REALLY worried about it. I
    don't know exactly what my fear is - however, I suffer anxiety
    attacks and am now on medication for them.

    I am still going to try to go on this trip. I have filled out
    passport forms to try to get myself to commit to this trip.

    My husband and daughter went about 3 years ago and had a great
    time. So this time it would be just my husband and myself going.
    We would stay at B&Bs (he has cousins in Barna who have a B&B) and
    would rent a car and travel from place to place at our liesure.

    I do have a few questions though. I understand that June 7 is a
    holiday in Ireland. What would that mean as far as any any activity
    plans?

    Also, does anyone have a suggestion for about how much money per day
    we should plan on bringing?

    Thanks for any help and encouragement you can give me.

    Maureen

1176.1Go for it!TALLIS::DARCYWed Jan 27 1993 14:4112
    You'll have no problem flying to Ireland Maureen. Aer Lingus
    usually flies 747s for transatlantic flights. The flights are
    usually very smooth and comfortable. In my experience Aer
    Lingus is very accomodating and the food is actually good for
    plane food. It's actually a short trip going over. One year
    we made it in 3 hours 50 minutes from Boston.  We were flying!  :v}

    I'd bring $100 a day for the both of you. And use your credit
    card wherever you can. They give good exchange rates.

    Have a great trip!

    Daily costs are about $100 room and meals? I guess that's right.
    I had an apartment and cooked most of my food. Saved my money
    for pints...

    exactly one year ago today I landed in Shannon and stayed for eight
    months. Nice trip, much better than I thought it would be. This
    was my first trip trans Atlantic too. Aer Lingus is fine and much
    better than some domestic US airlines I've flown.

    Have a blast and take a couple of sweaters even tho it's June.

    The holiday in June is a "bank holiday" and that means the Government
    and banking services are shut down. Also a holiday for the Digital
    Galway plant for example. I can't remember if the stores are open.

1176.4chain stores closed!BERN02::BYRNEThu Jan 28 1993 02:039
    No, the big stores aren't open on bank holidays but usually the corner
    shops are.

    B&B's are pretty full at bank holiday weekends since a lot of people
    travel to Killarney etc for a LONG weekend.

    Public transport uses the Sunday time table.

1176.5Welcome!!MACNAS::JDOOLEYStill here.....for now.Thu Jan 28 1993 07:4428
    Use these prices as a guide:-

    	B and B per person sharing with shower and W.C .... IR# 15.00

    		"		"  without   "    "         IR# 12.50

    	Lunch in a major town in a pub ( 12.00 noon to 2.30)IR#  4.00

    	Dinner per person at night ........................ IR# 10.00-18.00

    	Petrol (Gasoline),per Imperial Gallon..............IR# 2.70

    	Car hire is very expensive, arrange it before you go and ask for
    	the price to avoid a shock.

    	Drink does not vary as much between establishments as it does in
    	the States but Off licence (Take Outs) are dearer than the States.
    	American beers are imported novelties here and are dearer than the
    	States.

    	Very few motorways exist here, allow for an average speed of 44mph
    	when timing journeys and be prepared, the Irish travel a lot faster
    	on a given width of road than the Americans and also drive on the
    	wrong side of the road ( Left hand lane):).

    	Thats all I can think of for now.

    fyi: Maureen's last day was yesterday. I'll miss seeing her around
    the Mill. She's such a very nice lady.

    She did the trip and was delighted touring Ireland with her husband!!
    Now she wants to go back again.
