| Howdy,
The concert you are referring to will (hopefully) be staged in Dublin's Phoenix
Park sometime in summer '93.
The good news is that it will be a FREE concert.
The bad news is that, due to objections (I don't know who objected), the
concert may not take place.

| It may come as news to you that a lot of people do not like the idea of
large crowds, noise, fights and general vandalism, littering and
general disruption that such mass-entertainment inevitably brings.
The series of rock concerts in Slane Castle also had its share of
objectors on the grounds of disruption and general misbehaviour which
is a feature of large crowds today.
Not everyone likes U2 and I wouldn't like to be a resident near ANY
rock concert/disco etc....

....Think its next year ok..None lined up for this year anyway.
Problem is a venue as the last concerts resulted in alot of trouble
over ticket sales....There is no indoor venue big enough so a band like
U2 would be obliged to play numerous nights to cover demand.
Phoenix park place can hold 1 million so should be ok -) -).
rgs,
Mick
PS,...Dublin a good place ANY weekend...Not sure if the wine mixs well with
Guinness though....-)

Slane Castle concerts are cool. Nice setting and the farmer who turned
his hay field into a pay parking lot was very nice. At the end of the
day he had us follow him thru the fields to beat the traffic jams.

I've been to a few concerts in Slane and most of the local residents
didn't seem to mind too much. They were quite happy to charge me 2
for a coke and 1 for an apple. I don't know how much it was for the
'car park' (aka farmer's muddy field) but it wasn't cheap.

| Thank you all
therefore nobody knows anything.
Mick (1143.3) says that there are no indoor venue big enough: what
about Point Depot? It is big; I know that it is not enough for a
one-night concert, but in Italy is common for big events to play
numerous nights in the same venue (in the last months, for example, U2,
Dire Straits, Springsteen,...)
Mick again: I know that Dublin is a good place every weekend, and I'm
sure that wine doesn't mix well with Guinness, bur I was thinking of
doing an exchange
My note has started a debate about concerts: jdooley (1143.2) doesn.t
like large crowds near home; I agree with him, but I think that are not
so many residents in the Phoenix Park (I think is one of the biggest
town parks in the world). So, Mike B. (1134.1), I hope that the bad
news can turn in a good one.
Tony and Roberts (143.4 and .5) make me envious!
Ciao

It dosen't...
However, lots of large concerts go off without a hitch, from personal
experience I can cite U2 in Croke Park (85, and 87) and David Bowie in Slane (87).

The only serious incidents were at the Bob Dylan and Queen concerts.

Don't you think that Phoenix park is big enough to contain a roc concert with
room to spare? After all If the Pope could appear in Phoenix park (with no
objections that I know of), why not U2?

....The point depot is probably the main concert venue ok but its of
limited size (unsure what the capacity is)..Problem last year was that
promoters only booked a couple of nights for U2 and then regulated the
demand by inflating the prices...U2 were unhappy to put it mildly about
the ticket prices...and so never again...
Phoenix park is certainly big enough...
Trouble at rock conerts here is over hyped..It makes for
shock-media tactics..totally over blown.
re the wine...exchange can be arranged -) -) -)...A few "tours" can
be arranged....

Mick,
I understand you are in Dublin. Are you hiding under a barrell. D.O.S, myself
and a few others have not seen any sign of you.
And I wanted to introduce you to a Waterford friend of mine. Yes he understands
hurling. He holds court in Hartigans. Probably the best pint in Dublin

1143.12 | Need information on U2 concert, Dublin, 28th August | SCOTTC::MARSHALL | Spitfire Drivers Do It Topless | Wed Jul 28 1993 13:49 | 29 |
| Hi,
Is the concert referred to in previous replies still going ahead?
Is it still in Phoenix Park?
Is it still free?
I have some friends going to a U2 concert in Dublin on 28th August, and as far
as I know they paid for the tickets. I've also been told that this concert
"sold out" (implying payment?) within three hours of the tickets going on sale?
I thought this concert was just part of an 'ordinary' tour. So has the
original plan for a free concert been replaced by a conventional pay-for-it
concert at a different venue?
Anyway... the reason I'm posting this note is that I need a ticket for the
concert (so that I can go with above mentioned friends). But if it's a free
concert in a public park, I'm wondering if I need a ticket at all? Surely
people could just turn up and find somewhere to sit in the park?
Any info on this concert would be greatly appreciated, particularly details of
the ticketing arrangements - eg even if it's free, would I need to get a pass
in advance for admission? Could anyone tell me who to contact in Dublin for
"official" information?
If I do need a ticket, does anyone have a spare one I could have? If they were
originally free, we can work out a token payment; if you did have to pay for
them, we can work out an agreeable resale price.
Many thanks in advance for any help,
Scott Marshall

Unfortunately, the original plan to have a free concert in Phoenix park
was scrapped. I cant remember the reasons. The concert your friends
have bought tickets for are in the Point depot and do indeed cost.
I cant help you on the tickets
