| I think the Pope must have told a joke in Polish about bald headed
jackeens. No but seriously, I used to think more of Sinad O'Connor.
I agreed with here on the Andrew Dice Clay issue. But when she attacks
the Pope in that manner, she is showing her immaturity and age. She
may have ill feelings towards the Catholic church, but better she vent
her opinions in more positive ways.

| In a similar vein, that esteemed upholder of moral values, Madonna got
slated over her video and song " Like a Prayer ".
Both have done it for the publicity.
Sinid O'Connor also demanded, and got, and audience with our Prime
Minister to protest about our ban on abortion, especially in reference
to the availability of information on abortion services abroad and the
right of women to go abroad to obtain such services. Her political
protests are , in my view, only a part of her image to make her famous
and sell more records.
A pity, as she has bags more talent than a lot of what passes for music
nowadays.
The church, in my view showed remarkable maturity over the incident
only reply that they would pray for her and she had problems.
10 years ago she would have been roasted from the pulpits all over the country
and denounced as a mortal sinner.

andrew and sinead were both slated to appear on `saturday night'...
sinead objected to sharing the stage with someone who had little
regard for women, was rude and obnoxious. she and another regular
from the show did not show up for that particular episode. needless
to say, a fuss over all this was made.
i like both sinead and andrew dice clay....
they both have similar interests (limelight and all that)
i don't take the diceman seriously at all...
as for sinead, what's the big deal about tearing up a picture of
the pope (i have to ask?) i don't hold him in any higher esteem
than i do george bush, maggie thatcher or john major. and THAT
isn't saying too much either.

| > as for sinead, what's the big deal about tearing up a picture of
> the pope (i have to ask?) i don't hold him in any higher esteem
Because it's disrepectful. That's why. Just as I wouldn't hold up
a photograph of your mother in public and rip it to shreds. Andrew
Dice Clay is an obnoxious misogynist who takes pleasure in ridculing
women. His humor isn't funny - it's sick.
I still like Sinad O'Connor's music however. Madonna is another
story - I wouldn't waste my time talking about her ;v)

| If that's the way she feels about the Pope then she has a right to
express herself. People have been burning efigies, smearing posters
etc. of famous people for years, so what is so different about this.
Except for the fact that she had the balls (as it were)to do it in
front of millions of TV viewers. At least she stands up for what she
believes in.
As for it helping her to sell records.....what a load of rubbish. It
will probably hurt her record sales if anything.

| I did not say she should not have the right to express herself.
I am a total proponent of freedom of expression (not like
some governments' broadcasting policies!)
However, I think it ironic that she didn't want to perform with
Andrew Dice Clay (because of his prejudices towards women, gays,
and immigrants) yet she herself displays her prejudices and
religious intolerances by ripping up the icon of the Catholic
Church.

each individual has a right to their own opinion and that includes
freedom to express those opinions as well. the pope being a public
figure is at risk just as every other public figure.
besides, i think its disrespectful of you to be slagging her behind
her back.
i also read in the globe that the catholic prelates are demanding
an apology from NBC....
which is about as presposterous as one can get.... but what can
one expect from the church when they've stooped to the level of
lawyers to put out `ads' to call the faithful.

| Anyone who was made aware of the life stories of the 17 martyrs of the
17th Century Reformation in Ireland will understand how Catholics view
anyone who rips up pictures of His Holiness.
In that era we had Catholics with the guts to stand up for their
beliefs and die for them.
Now we have traitorous ex-Catholics who spit in the face of Christ when
they insult the image of his Vicar on Earth.

| As I understand it, Sinad O'Connor was singing a song about child
abuse. At the end of the song, she said something like "fight the real
enemy" and tore up the picture of the Pope. Her reason was that she
believed that the clergy were responsible for a lot of child abuse.
From the newspapers etc, I understand that some members of the Catholic
clergy have been involved in cases of abuse, and what's worse, attempts
to cover them up. She is right to highlight these. However, her manner
of doing so detracts from what she is trying to say. Personally, I'm
not offended by what she did, but a lot of people are. What they will
see is a `bald-headed loud mouth ripping a holy image to shreds'. Her
message is lost.

I agree with Jimmy's take on it. She was trying to get at the CAtholic
church, in particular those directly involved in child abuse ( look at
all the cases here in Boston in last few months ?), as well as she
claims that the church condone her abuse as a child, claiming that the
nuns at her school were well aware of what was being done to her at
home.
I also agree that he way of doing it may have messed up her message,
she is being seen as " an offensive, bald headed, image seeking
Madonna".

cover ups of its clergy's `extra curricular interests'?

Anyone who thinks madonna is a sex kitten needs to have either their
eyesight checked or their brain examined under a micro-scope. In my
opinion she is revolting.
I think sinead has the freedom to do whatever she feels like doing. I
also think she is stuck in adolescence. When she grows up she will
porbably realize that actions taken to purposely "shock" someone
usually create a negative impact. And are counter-productive in the
end.

Funny tho I don;t agree with Sinead, I think your perspective is wrong,
Sinead was an abused child ( well documented by now ) and probably does
need some help in coming to grips with her anger.
I feel she shuld do something more positive soon, or as someone
mentioned previously, she'll soon be "too hot" to handle. Mind you, as
per this weeks Irish Emigrant; this action does not appear to be
getting much reaction in Ireland and here its on most TV channels every

Clancy Brothers. At first I couldn't tell if the crowd was booing
her or just not settling down. While she appeared to wait for
silence, and not getting it, Chris Kristopherson (sp) came back
out on stage, went up to her, kinda put his arm over her shoulder,
and said into her ear (but loud enough for the mike to pick it up)
something to the effect of 'don't let the b****rds get you down'.
After he walked off stage, the crowd was definitely booing, and
then she did a vocal only. I thought it was some sort of 'poem',
not song.
