Great note. I grew up in the '50s in the West of Ireland. Today I get the shivers when I think of it, because the abiding image I have is of bleakness and decay. Sure there were "good times", but now I realise that I was watching the last kick of a dying culture, killed by emigration and political apathy. In the '60s, things improved but at a cost. This part of the world is still struggling, but at least is working off a stronger base. Toby |
