He has the silver medal, which is no mean achievement.
Micael Carruth should be fighting soon, at least sometime in the next
hour.

Is that *any* medal or the 4th GOLD medal ?
It was good to see Ireland on the medal table even though I didn't see
any of the events.

1110.5 | Any answers to the fourth?? | MACNAS::JDOOLEY | Do not take anything for granted | Mon Aug 10 1992 05:24 | 6 |
| 4TH Gold.
The last was Ronnie Delaney in the 1500 meters in Melbourne in 1956.
A Dr. Callaghan took gold in the hammer in 1926.
I don't know the fourth.....

That makes 5, all the better.
It's good that Ireland won two medals at this Olympics (even though one
was by a northener who likes to hang union jacks from his windows - but
that's a rathole we won't get into).
My question is, does anyone think we should have won more ? I am
disappointed that we only got two. For the last few olympics we have
been happy to pick up a bronze here or there or satisfied with a
'personal best'. A few years ago when the govt introduced the national
lottery we were told that a lot of the money would go towards sport,
i.e. building better facilities and producing better athletes. I
haven't seen any evidence of this in Barcelona.
Did we have anyone competing in the swimming ? Does Ireland have an
olympic sized swimming pool yet ? (A few years back it didn't).
Ireland did pretty poorly in the track & field. Has Santry staadium
been upgraded as promised ?
Any other examples ?
What has happened to the lottery millions ? Have the govt taken it to
pay off the national debt or did it really go towards sport.
Tony.

1110.8 | Let's not forget the others .... | MACNAS::TJOYCE | | Wed Aug 12 1992 10:24 | 32 |

While we're at it, here are our other medallists:
Silver:
John McNally, Boxing, Helsinki, 1952
Fred Teidt, Boxing, Melbourne, 1956
David Wilkins & James (?) Wilkinson, Yachting, Moscow, 1980
John Treacy, Marathon, Los Angeles, 1984
Wayne McCullough, Boxing, Barcelona, 1992
Bronze:
Fred Gilroy, Boxing, Melbourne, 1956
Jim Caldwell, Boxing, Melbourne, 1956
Jim McCourt, Boxing, Tokyo, 1964
Mick Dowling, Boxing, Mexico City, 1968
Hugh Russell, Boxing, Moscow, 1980
As a piece of Olympic history its probably as good a
record as any other nation of comparable size and wealth.
You can see that Boxing is our most consistent discipline by
far, so if we were ever to win another gold it was likely
to be in this sport. By the way, in the first Olympics,
an Irishman got two golds, but had to compete in British
colours. Maybe we can get that changed someday - in the
Seoul Olympics the Korean who won the Berlin Olympic marathon
in Japanese colours got his medal re-accredited to South
Korea.

P.S. I'm a bit shaky on the bronze medallists. Have I got them all?

The lotto millions... a small percentage has gone to sport and the
arts....the rest has been hijacked by the Dept. of Finance, not to pay
off the national debt but to substain the ailing health service

1110.10 | Eamon Coughlan | MACNAS::TJOYCE | | Thu Aug 13 1992 05:05 | 26 |
|
There's always an Irish "hard luck" story at every Olympics, but
Eamonn Coughlan's is probably the worst.
Coughlan was fourth in an Olympic final TWICE - in 1976 he was beaten
in the 1500m by John Walker (NZ), in 1980 he was beaten in the
5000m by Miruts Yifter "the Shifter" (Eth). In each case he went
out for gold but spent himself challenging the front runner, and
was passed on the run-in by other athletes.
The horrible thing is that the Finnish runner who passed him
at the Moscow Games (Manninka) later failed a dope test.
The Olympic council demanded the return of the Bronze medal
awarded at the Games, but Manninka has refused to give it
up. No one could blame Coughlan for feeling bitter, though
I do not think he medal can be awarded to him at this stage.
Most Bronze medallists say that they place little value on
them at the time, regretting the loss of gold or silver,
but over time the medals assume a special significance. Of
course, Coughlan had other glory moments - holder of the 1500m
indoor world record, winner of the 5000m gold medal at the
inaugural Athletics World Championships in Helsinki (1983) but at
the Olympics he was always a "nearly man".

1110.11 | More on Medallists | MACNAS::TJOYCE | | Mon Aug 17 1992 05:07 | 15 |

In the list of medallists I left out Tony Byrne, who won a bronze
at the Melbourne Olympics - in boxing, of course!
Whether Ireland's is a good record or not is completely relative.
Compared to a country like New Zealand, who came away with 14
medals in this Olympics and 20 in the last (including some gold),
it is pretty mediocre. However, compared to countries like Belgium,
Denmark, or Portugal, its reasonable.
The big differentiator is the amount of investment in sport by
the country concerned, not the intrinisic sporting ability of
the inhabitants.

Did you conveniently forget that he carried the Tricolour, leading the
Irish contingent at the Seoul games, or that he would have stood to
attention at the playing of the Irish national anthem had he won this
time around?

1110.13 | Give me some more of that good old CONFUSION! | MACNAS::TJOYCE | | Tue Aug 18 1992 04:49 | 24 |

Re: .7 and .12
Of course people like McCullough and Willie John McBride are
completely confusing .... it must choke people like McBride to
stand at Lansdowne Road for "Amhrainn na Fhiann" but they endure it.
What we need is MORE CONFUSION not less! People who consider
themselves "Loyalist" and "Unionist" need to acknowledge the
amount of "Irish" in their make-up, while people who are
considered "Nationalists" need to acknowledge the "Englishness"
in much of our culture and customs (e.g. language, legal system,
democracy, much shared history, social habits....).
Why not Ken McGuinness M.P. giving a speech "as Gaeilge" to the
Gaelic League, or the Wolfe Tones giving us a few bars of "The
Sash"? To hell with the stereotypes!
