1100.0. "Three Mile Ditch ??" by AKOCOA::MHUGHES () Sun Jul 12 1992 21:05

We are trying to trace some of my wife's relatives back to the ol' sod.
She learned today that some of them came from County Galway from
an area called "Three mile ditch".

I've looked on the maps and can not locate any such reference so I
thought I'd throw it up here on CELT and see if any knowledgeable
folks in the Galway area could tell me where it is.

Dunno about Three mile ditch, but there is a place outside of Galway
City, in Castlegar area called " Two mile ditch" ....... but I'm sure
there's a Three mile ditch somewhere also but I can't help. Maybe
checking on the shorter one may help ..... what was the name, that
    could help with association.

    The name would be "Gibbons".
Where exactly is the Castlegar area ?
I suppose it could be "Two Mile" rather than Three Mile, after all,
this is the result of 90 odd years of verbal history.
Would you happen to know the significance of the name or how
it came to be known as "Two Mile Ditch"?
1100.3I'm very close to it now.......MACNAS::JDOOLEYDo not take anything for grantedTue Jul 14 1992 10:458
Castlegar is a parish approx 2-3 miles north and east of Galway city.
The recent borough Boundary revisions put this parish almost inside the
city limits but it is still predominantly suburban in character.
It is famous for hurling at Parish level and is the home of the
Connolly brothers, Galway county hurlers in the mid 1980's.
Digitals Galway plant is not 100 yards from the Castlegar parish
boundary so someone here must know more about Two-mile-ditch.

To take a different cut at this ...

The placename "Twomileditch" reminds me of two other places in Ireland
..."Sixmilebridge" outside Limerick and "Ninemilehouse" between Clonmel
    and Kilkenny.

Any other odd placenames of this type?

You guys were no help at all, so at the end of Sept. my wife and
I hopped on an Aer Lingus flight and went looking for our roots.
We never did find Three-Mile-Ditch but did find out where her
Gibbons/Connolly's came from. We got some of the records from the
Country Records Office which disclosed Moneymore townlands in
Oranmore Parish. We went over to the Parish and Fr. ?? let us go
thru the baptism records going back to the 1850's. Got all the
Gibbons plus four children nobody over here knew about.
