The "thing-ee" over the a is called a fada.

    Pronounced Far-dah

    Like Fada and Mudda	:-)

Which Gaelic? Irish, Scottish or Manx?

The Scottish Gaelic is "Soraidh leat" or "Soraidh leibh" if talking to
more than one person.

The Irish is similar. `Sln' on its own is used fairly informally,
    but to be formally correct:

Sln leat - if talking to one

Sln libh - if talking to many
1097.8origin of "slan"SIOG::HANLONMon Jul 13 1992 12:179
The literal meaning of slan is "safe". I think slan on its own is
an abbreviation of "slan abhaile", or "safe home". In other words,
"good luck to ye, and I hope you get home safely", which is a form
    of a farewell!

    ... Tony.

BTW, how do you put the fada thingee on the a ?

To type `a' fada, using my vt340 terminal:

Hit the <compose_character> key, followed by the <a> key, followed
    by the <'> key.

    Good luck!
