Hmmm not sure. I too have heard of Telecomm Ireland and I think its a
spin off of Telecomm Eireann, working on International Business. I
read an article a few months ago where they had offices in USA and
Japan.
I may be wrong ...... but I know I say it somewhere.

| Is Eireann <> Ireland ?
Maybe they're just using the English (language) equivalent of their
name. Nothing terribly wrong with that in a country that speaks
English.

1096.4 | Eireann is Ireland. | MACNAS::JDOOLEY | Do not take anything for granted | Fri Jul 10 1992 05:45 | 6 |
| Irish uses declensions, like Latin , so that "ireann" is the genetive
case of the word "ire". The genetive case is used to denote posession,
so you have "Poblacht na hireann", "Republic of Ireland" etc.
ire is some class of Celtic goddess, an earth-mother figure used to
denote the land, hence its use to denote the land of the Celts.

| I also worked for Telecom Eireann for a while. I think that the use of
Telecom Ireland may be to avoid the confusion caused by "Eire" being
unknown to a large part of the world.
I remember we sent a request for information to a US company and
recieved a nice letter back regretting that they do not do business
with hostile countries. It was addressed to Telecom Iran in Dublin 2.

what it means!!
So much for their public relations office!

1096.7 | International business | CODS::POCONNELL | Godot's been and gone! | Tue Jul 21 1992 07:05 | 8 |
| Some time ago it was decided that when Telecom Eireann engaged
in international activities that they should call themselves
Telecom Ireland. It is not a new or a subsidiary company.
In addition to getting mail addressed to Telecom Iran, Dublin,
there have also been cases of Telecom Eireann, Tehran.

Pat O'Connell ! How are you this weather ?
Are you telling me that if you call me, you use Telecom Ireland's
network, but if you call Gerry you use Telecom Eireann's ? And they
said it was a monopoly !
John.
