1088.0. "Ireland 1992" by SIOG::CASSERLY (Eireannach is ea me) Wed Jul 01 1992 09:33

With the debate on spliting the file currently under discussion it
would be a shame to see that happening. So to counteract the constant
politicising of the notes file this note is for current festivals and
events in Ireland. It should be useful to all ye potential tourists.

1088.1"A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER"SIOG::CASSERLYEireannach is ea meWed Jul 01 1992 12:3526
"September in Ireland is always a treat. The glorious colours of the
Irish Country side; the mild autumnal climate; the celebration of the
harvest; the All Ireland Finals;the folk festivals and racing at its
    best."
During the month of September Bord Failte are organising a giant
Homecoming Festival in conjunction with many local organisations
    throughout the country.
" The entire country has responded magnificently to the concept of an
Irish Homecoming Festival and it has produced over 140 New
Events, specially tailored to the returning emigrant of
Irish,Scots/Irish and Anglo-Irish ancestry. This special programme
    buzzes with excitement and includes:
Homecoming Festivals,Clan Rallies,Genealogical Events, Military and
Maritime History workshops and seminars,Special Sporting occasions,
    Arts and Cultural Festivals,Exhibitions,Farming,Technology &
    Science,wildlife and Art Collections.
This special festival is a joint venture between the Irish Tourist
Board and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and is supported by the
    International Fund for Ireland.
The country will be alive with the sounds of music,dance,story-telling,
sport and festive occasions in September"

1088.2Welcome HomeSIOG::CASSERLYEireannach is ea meWed Jul 01 1992 12:5322
                             The Year of the Irish
Ireland,a small country hardly measuring 300 miles from north to south,
has given its sons and daughters to many nations throughout the world.
Up to 70 millionpeople of Irish decent are scatterd throughout the
    globe.
You are invited to return home this Septemberand discover the
origins of the great history of your family. If you live in
Australia, the elders of your family may have been aboard one of the
many convict ships which set sail in the late eighteenth century for
    that far distant land.
If you live on the great North American continent, your ancestors may
wellhave left the Irish shores at the height of the famine in search of
    a new and prosperous life.
For those of you living in Britain, your ties with Ireland are
    probably of more recent origins.
Whatever your connection, you are invited back in September for the
biggest ever gathering of the " International Irish".
The people of Ireland, North, South, East and West, will ensure that
this will be the best homecoming ever.
The festival kicks off on September 1st with an official opening
ceremony in Cork and formally closes in Derry on September 30th.

1088.3Trace your AncestorsSIOG::CASSERLYEireannach is ea meWed Jul 01 1992 13:1627
As J.M.Synge wrote in "Deirdre of the Sorrows"... "It is a lonesome
thing to be away from Ireland".

Irish genealogical research affords the means to trace your ancestors
who departed these shores in centuries past. The sadness of this
departure can be partly alleviated by the excitement of discovering and
reliving these origins. It is ancestry that provides the strongest
thread which links the Irish at home and abroad.
There will be a genealogical congress in Kilkenny,a conference on the
Scots/Irish in Belfast and various lectures by International experts.

For the run up to the Homecoming Festival the Irish Genealogical
Project is offering a special family history research service. To
initiate your research you fill in a special form and return to the
address at hte end of the note asap. The fee for the initial
assessment is IR15. The service operates only until August 1st 1992.
The fee covers initial assessment only, and will advise you of the
agency most appropriate to carry out full research.

    Tom,

This is NOT to politize the note. I find it VERY informative.

Do you have any dates for any festivals in North Ireland? I ask this
because some of us visit there.

I'll start it off with the West Belfast Festival.
I think it will be heldthe week of August 8 - 14th.

      Paddy,
I will get some info from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and
post it when I receive it.
To leave out the Norths activities was not a deliberate act,it just
happens that I have all the info at hand for the south. I will correct
    the imbalance (sp) asap.

Just a little advise on posting DTN's. You shouldn't give the first
number, as in (7)827 as this varies depending which country you are
calling from. For instance if I were to call Ireland from Canada I
    would use (8)822.

Sorry to go off topic, but I thought this might save some confusion.
