1078.0. "Clonmel closing" by MACNAS::TJOYCE () Mon Jun 22 1992 05:53

    On Friday of this week, the DEC site in Clonmel officially ceases
    to be a company facility any longer.

    I would like to say a word of appreciation for the happy years
    my family spent in Clonmel, and wish everyone there a future of
    prosperity and happiness.

    For anyone reading these notes abroad and thinking of visiting
    Ireland, you would be advised to look at the South Tipperary/
    Kilkenny/Waterford region for inclusion in your itinerary.
    For one thing, the region is undersold from a tourist point of
    view, so it is quiet and relatively unspoilt. There are beautiful
    mountain walks, lakes, forests, beaches - almost as nice as
    the West, but easier to access. The area has excellent fishing.

    [Being from the West, my first loyalty is to the Galway region
     - but I was surprised at the beauty of the SE when I went there
     to live.]

    If you are interested in antiquities, the regions around Clonmel
    has possibly the finest collection of medieval sites in the
    country. Besides the Rock of Cashel, and the medieval city
    of Kilkenny, there is Cahir Castle and the fascinating Tudor
    Castle in Carrick-on-Suir. Farther afield there is Jerpoint Abbey,
    and Athassel Priory.

    Its also worth mentioning that the All-Ireland Fleadh is to be
    held in Clonmel this year.

    So, its goodbye to Clonmel, long may it continue to prosper.

    Toby

1078.1Clonmel is good for you.MEALA::OHARATue Jun 23 1992 06:3217
    As somebody, like Toby, who was originally from the West, (Mayo), but
    who now is firmly entrenched in Clonmel, let me thank Toby for his
    positive words about Clonmel and the region.

    It took my wife and I less that a weekend to decide to not to go to
    Galway as we wished to remain in Clonmel for a lot of the reasons Toby
    mentioned.

    Clonmel has been battered in the past few years by unemployement but
    all in all I would'nt swap it for any other town/city.

    Also thanks to the many people who Emailed my to wish me luck in the
    future.

    See you at the Fleadh!!

    Dom

Toby,

Why has Clonmel closed down?
How big was the plant and what did it produce?

Dom,

What is the job market like in the Clonmel area?
I'm a Clare man but would like to live in the sunny
south east when I return shortly from this sun scorched
land.

Questions questions one would think I'm confused.

Well I am.
1078.3STAY PUT!!!MEALA::OHARAWed Jun 24 1992 09:3619
    Clonmel was closed (my opinion only) because there were three Mnfg
    plants in Ireland and Clonmel and Mervue moved into Galway's ballyBrit
    plant. Clonmel was viewed as a high performance plant, 3rd in Corp.
    A Simple to much floor space problem.

    re Jobs - to say it is bad at the moment is an understatement. Clonmel
    is experiencing its worst unemployement figures ever, in excess of 23%.
    The Town has lost over 700 Mnfg jobs in the past three years . If you
    are chuching a good job to look for work in Ireland the only honest
    advice I can give you is DON'T.

    The plant closes tomorrow with about 5-8 staying for another 2-3
    weeks to complete the close down. Its very sad both for the employees
    and for the town.

    regards

    Dom
1078.4What's the status of the plant?TALLIS::DARCYWed Jun 24 1992 11:099
    Dom,

    Did Digital own the Clonmel plant? If so, is it on the market
    for sale? Have any Japanese or German firms showed any interest
    in relocating there?

    It's a great location - very livable.

    /George
1078.5Native talent to the rescue......MACNAS::JDOOLEYDo not take anything for grantedWed Jun 24 1992 11:196
    MF Kent, manufacturers of high voltage switching and control equipment,
    are set to take over the Clonmel plant. They are an Irish based company
    with a full order book and a bright future and I think they are to keep
    on some ex-Digital staff in the plant maintenance side of operations.

1078.6How about the others?TALLIS::DARCYWed Jun 24 1992 11:354
    Good news. Ultimately, smaller native companies are better than
    the multinationals, especially for the smaller towns like Clonmel.

    What is the future of Mervue and Galway, with the closing of Clonmel?

    I believe there is another company from Massaschussets moving
    into one of Digital's old buildings in Mervue. Hopefully they
    will do as much for Galway as Digital has done down through the years.

I have lots of great memories of the Clonmel plant and the area. You won't find
a finer group of professionals anywhere and they were also the most hospitable,
friendly folks I've ever had the pleasure to know.
