1058.1The PlayboysCTHQ3::COADYMon May 18 1992 15:2515

    Went to see the PLAYBOYS at the weekend. An interesting movie, set in
    a small village in Ireland in mid 1950's. Its based in REDHILLS in Co.
    Cavan, tho its hard to figure that from the movie - it could be any one
    of the small villages with Church, Pub, POst-Office and shop, anywhere
    in Ireland. Its about the group from Dublin that bring the plays to
    the small towns for a few days every year - everything from Shakespeare
    to Gone with the Wind.

    Niall Quinn puts in a great performance as does Robin Wright (sp) as
    the lead actress.

    I liked it, but in many ways it was sad ......... the views of the
    church haven't changed much in 40 yrs.

    Is Tom Cruise's new film "Far and Away" on release.

    It seems to have got good reviews at Cannes. Some "oirishry"
    but himself and his wife (Nicole Kidman) got their accents
    right.

1058.5this w'endCTHQ3::COADYThu May 21 1992 12:117

    I believe it opens this w'end in the Boston area, if I can't find
    something else to do on Memorial w'end, I may catch it. From the
    snippets on TV, it looked a wee bit to much "begorrah & bejasus" for
    me, and definitely not quite as colorful as The Commitments.

1058.6Far & Away - not bad !CTHQ3::COADYTue May 26 1992 09:1516
I went to see Far and Away last night, in " Havaad Squah". It was better
than I expected, not too 'stage oirish'. Both Tom & Nickie did a good
job on the accents and indeed she looks real Irish, with red hair and blue
eyes. Now I have to admit that Tom did not look Irish and in fact is
"very non Irish looks" did stand out among Niall Tobin, Cyril Cusack, Derry
Power etc ........ as did his brogue.

I would describe more as a romantic film, very entertaining, but no real
Oscar winner.

I also doubt that without Tom Cruise as a crowd puller it would get so
much publicity. For instance, if it were Miley & Biddy in the lead
roles, I don't think I would have had to que :=).

Holy God!

    I'm not so sure this movie deserves to be in the "Irish Movies"
    category any more than "Ryan's Daughter", which at least deserved to be
    shot in 70mm. I saw this at the Charles in Boston Saturday night and
    didn't see anything in the way of cinematography to justify the big
    screen format. Even the opening postcard shots had a blandness of
    composition which did not do justice to the potential of the scenery.

    And where was Fungi, the Dingle Dolphin, that was listed in the
    credits? Did his parts end up in the cutting room floor, or perhaps a
    can of cat food?

1058.8Fungi - good question 1CTHQ3::COADYTue May 26 1992 11:057

    I think the 'lads' must have ate poor auld Fungi, they did look hungry
    enough.

    On Irish movies title ........... I decided against a scientific
    description of what it could mean ......... don;t matter to me.

1058.9How about a Feile Fungi?TALLIS::DARCYTue May 26 1992 11:351
    Is Fungi pronounced with a hard or soft "g"?

    They must also think the moviegoing public is illiterate. They
    actually had a voiceover read the opening prologue that scrolled by
    about peasant vs. landlord, etc.

    I saw Far and Away yesterday. I thought it was interesting how
    the landlord obtains his land at the end.

    It's not one of the best films ever made but worth seeing on
    a rainy afternoon. Oh that Dingle landscape!

1058.15Hear my song / The miracleBERN02::OREILLYThere's a fish on top of Shandon swears he's Elvis.Wed Sep 02 1992 09:1312
I saw 'Hear my song' last night. Best film I've seen in a long time.
Its about a theatrical agent's attempt to get Josef Locke (the Irish
tenor) back to England for a concert.
The director is Irish and its filmed mostly in Ireland. Look out for
David Maccallum (?) of The Man from UNCLE fame.

I also saw 'The Miracle' by Neil Jordan (Company of Wolves, Angel)
a few months back. Another great film set in Bray and Dublin. The cast
is Irish with the exception of American Beverly d'Angelo. At the time I
think it was overshadowed by The Commitments.

    Hi!

    I saw a brief preview over the weekend of Daniel Day Lewis'
    new film. What can people tell me about it? Is it based on a novel?

    Hello,

    I saw "In the Name of the Father" on Saturday. I thought it was good
    although a bit slow in spots (albeit the 15 years probably went by a
    lot slower for him!)

    It also didn't give much background on the 'troubles' so for one of
    my friends who doesn't know much of the history it left some holes.

    His comment was that it was a 'sad movie'....

    As seen in this week's Boston Pheonix:

    "Movie of the Week: The Secret of Roan Inish (1995). John Sayles
    directs this fantasy about a girl who thinks her brother has been
    stolen by the selchies, half-human, half-seal creatures of Ireland.
    Opens next Friday, February 24th, at theaters to be announced; there's
    also a benefit screening for Planned Paretnhood this Monday, Febraury
    20th at the Coolidge Corner."

    So Jen

    When's the Celts Conference screening ?

    I still remember visiting Harvard en masse to watch the Commitments
    several years ago. Sounds like it's time for another outing.

    There was a big write-up about John Sayles in Sunday's Globe.

    Someone I work with asked about a movie with Albert Finney. Can't
    remember the name, something like An Uncommon Man, with Finney playing
    a bus conductor. Anyone know the exact name, details, etc.
