1006.0. "Poteen to be made legal" by MACNAS::JDOOLEY (Go on outa dat,we don't believe ya) Thu Feb 20 1992 07:29

Today's "Irish Independant" carries a piece about the possibility
of poteen, the now illegal home-made spirit that is famous in the
States as "moonshine" being made legal.

The view was expressed by independant M.E.P T.J Maher that the
government should consider licensing pilot projects in farmhouses
and cottage distilling of poteen to attract tourists and create jobs
    in disadvantaged areas.

This view was made in the background of liberal E.C proposals on
    home brewing and distilling.

What do the panel think of this ????

There is already atleast one company in Ireland that markets the
stuff, they had a booth set up at the Boston Irish Ventures Trade

more.(if the wife lets me, that is).

To legalize it will ruin the excitement of going thru customs with the

Having not had the opportunity to buy, taste it or even see it I would
like to ask the experts to describe poteen to me.

I come from a very rigid law-abiding family and would probably be
disowned if I ever tried to buy or consume the stuff.

From what I read here it seems to be colourless, like vodka.
Does it have a distinctive aroma, like Gin??

Poteen is made from a combination of Barley, Malt extract,
Sugar, Yeast and Water. The mixture is boiled, the steam
goes through coiled pipes where it is cooled to produce
    	the liquid.

It's colorless like vodka but has a sweet taste to it.
Although illegal, many non drinking housewives keep a bottle
handy for making the Christmas cakes. A bad batch could kill you,
so you have to be careful. Its best to know the distiller
personnally or find out where the local guards get theirs.

Lately, there's been a crack down. The fine is 1000 pounds
for making it, so its a little harder to get. The stuff they're
marketing over in the states is just your basic vodka/gin with
    	a cutesy name.

This knowledge comes from reading, since it would be wrong
to break the laws of another country.

In reply to 104.13 all I can say is that its a good thing you wern't
a boy, Denephew is a silly name........

Thanks for the info on potteen, the recent fines have virtually
demolished the trade, also I hear that the present-day makers are not
    to be trusted.

I think I'll stick to the Guinness a while longer.

It was his prep for the big race, some were not impressed, but Pat

was ok, but we need rain again. The hard ground won't help him.

I don't think anyone is, but anyway he is so badly addicted to nicotine
and besotted from the organo phosphates in the sheep dip a drop of the
bad stuff will not make any noticable difference.

The cidonatown kid also seems to be seriously affected. He is sending
round manic e-mails to all and sundry suggesting Limerick will win this
year. I thought I have finally rid the world of this scourge last year
when I told him Wexford would win after they beat Offaly, but the man
doesn't even notice he is punch drunk and should be counted out on his
feet. He says he still keeps the pledge, so I don't know what the cause
    of it is.

yes getting these messages from the Limerick man...he is seriously
    under allusions about limerick...

Could be worse. Was down Lorrha way in Tipp a while back and the
"new" offaly manager Mr Mcintire came in we offered our sympathy and
wished him the best...ie the best way out of the town.. We don't hold it
against him too much..they shame of on his future generations will be
    burden enough...

Cloughjordan is free of poteen..You have to coax it out of the chaps in
the Kinitty mountains..or even better up the Slivermines mountains..

Mention of mountains was up some on Friday night - close to Jim Bolgers
    stables.

Got a tip for a horse called Lucy's Gal and was told to put my shirt on
    her.

Not being a betting man I just wagered a small sum. She duly obliged a
a nice 7-1. I was told to watch her for the 2000 guineas???. I know
nothing about racing gee gees so you can take that for what it is
    worth.

Incidentally I was also given a tip for another nag in the next race
but could not remember its name. It was not Poteen. I was told it won
also but I am not greedy.

Its a bit of a bore when the bloody jockeys and stable boys are in
drinking. You would get a kick from a horse in there. I generally leave
    when they arrive.

Jaysus Martin, you are supposed to pass on this kind of thing before
    the race not afterwards!!!

Please return to that mountain and ask that Moses guy for some more,
    and phone me immediately.

I expect Lucy's Gal will go in the Irish 1000.

Poteen is down to 10/1 but there has been a lot of money for some
Newmarket talking horses and they may be having savers on him.

And BTW it has nothing to do with greed. Bookies have sachels full of
money which are too heavy for them and it is good for them if you can
take some out of the bag.

Poteen runs on Saturday in the 2000 Guineas. He is 14/1 with Ladbrokes
and represents good ew value. The ground is fast, which is not to his
advantage but he should still run very well. He has the best group 1
form in the field, but he doesn't 'talk' as well as the favorites.
And as an old timer once said to me,"If he can't blow for himself,
there is no use you blowing for him."
