984.0. "Irish Pub Functional Spec" by MEIS::HURLEY () Mon Jan 06 1992 14:09

Based on a few of the last entries, there seems to be a
difference of opinion on various Boston watering holes.

This brings up the question. What makes a good Irish Pub?
What do you look for in Atmosphere, Guinness, Music, Food etc.

If you good a buyout package, what kind of a pub would you open.

     For me it's: The Barman
                   The Guinness
The smell of turf(in the winter)
                   The tractor parked outside.
The music played by the local talent.
                   The occasional Irish Coffee
The fish and chips or grilled ham and cheese sandwich.
The friend you leave, that was a stranger when you got there
The couch I sat in listining to the fiddler
The jokes stories and pleasant ribbing from friends
The solid metal clank of the metal security door.
The things one has in common with the ordinary (wo)man.
                   The culture.
The 'welcome, come on in and set awhile'
This isn't about Boston Watering holes but what I remembered about the
pubs in Ireland. Sure would like to go to one tonight.

I think a good pub should consist of atleast the following:

    	Good creamy pints of Guinness
(similar to those found in Limericks, but less expensive)

Irish music (Live or recorded) at ALL times
(Irish music only, if you want "Rock & Roll" go somewhere else, the
pub should have a good collection of Christy Moore, Pouges, Sawdoctors
         Waterboys and Clare FM tapes)

    	An Irish barman
(Not one that thinks Green beer is mandatory on St. Patricks Day)

A good mix of Irish and Domestic beers
(not just bottles "Yuck" of Guinness)

A good blend of both local and Irish born clients
(You can't have an Irish pub without Irish people)

Did I mention Good Guinness ??

Irish Breakfast on weekends served from Noon to 4.00 PM

A big screen TV showing Irish Sports.
(Just to keep the Galway lads happy)

	Weekly Sessions
(Bodhran players need not apply) :-)

	Dart Board

Bar Sponsored Athletic league (Dart team, baseball team, rowing team)
(I've always been a large "Athletic Supporter")

Discount Air Fares for travel to Ireland

    	More Porter !!!

    	Taxi Service

    	Potcheen

    	Goats Milk

Hairy Pigs feet/knuckles and Brown bread

is there a group of you out there getting together to see
    	them on the 29th???

apart from that and sticking to the topic at hand....

    	good company
    	good guinness
    	good music
and plenty of blarney to go around....

That's the basis of Flann O'Brien's (the writer not the Pub)
one act play "Thirst". In that the barman keeps talking about
the Sahara desert so the guard has to have a pint himself and
soesn't cite the bar. they performed it at Limericks last year.

I read in the paper today that the "Bog of Allen" will be closed
for the next few weeks, due to the fact that the owners "forget"
to renew his liquor license ....

Neil ... whats the status with the Channel ??

I heard that they filed for bankruptcy a few weeks ago, so will
there be a Sawdoctors concert there on February 29th ??

A few of us will be in Boston Saturday afternoon, inorder to
provide some quality "attitude adjustment" for a fellow deccie
who will be returning to Dublin after a week of training ... :-)

The Saw Doctors are being sponsored by the 1882 Irish Embassy Pub
in Easton. They had the ad in this month's "Local" a new
publication which specializizes in articles on Boston Irish pubs
    	local bands etc.

They may move the location. They appeared at the Channel and the
Embassy	Pub the last visit. The Pubs number is 508-238-1882.
If I hear anymore I'll post it.
984.13Why not have them open for U2 on March 17th at the Garden ??ACTGSF::BURNSSound BallyvaughanThu Jan 09 1992 14:138

..and that reminds me of the story of young lass..

"Help! Help !" cried the young woman as she staggered
up the steps of the police station. "An Irishman molested
	me!"

"How'd you know he was Irish?" inquired the segeant at
	the desk.

"I had to help him," she gasped.
